Boise State Football Adds Another Weapon to Arsenal, Bad News for Opponents
The news this week out of Boise was that sophomore wide receiver Geraldo Boldewijn has been reinstated by the NCAA.
Boldewijn was one of three Bronco football players from Amsterdam held out of game play until questions surrounding their eligibility were answered. Senior safety Cedric Febis, who is one of the three, was only held out for the opener against Georgia, while defensive tackle Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe is still waiting to return. No news yet when that might happen.
With the addition of Boldewijn the Broncos add a weapon to their already potent arsenal. Boldewijn runs a sub-4.4 40 and at 6'4" is a big target for senior quarterback Kellen Moore. Moore has lacked the deep ball this season after losing his favorite targets last year of Titus Young, now with the Detroit Lions, and Austin Pettis, now with the St. Louis Rams.
If you were at the Broncos' spring game like I was, you saw what Boldewijn could do. His long arms, swift moves and speed downfield made you think that he was going to be a big-time playmaker for Boise State. Now we will finally get to see if that is true.
While I don't expect Boldewjin to make a huge impact this week, I do expect him to contribute. Just his presence on the field will make the way Fresno State plays defense different. The scouting report so far this season on the Broncos is mostly an underneath passing game, with not much of a deep threat. This week that scouting report has changed.
Fresno will have to be mindful of Boldewijn's presence at all times. Add to that the improved running game that we saw last week against Nevada, and I would say the Bulldogs are going to have their hands full.
Things to look for against Fresno State:
First, is Kellen Moore feeling his old self again?
Last week Moore had a subpar performance against Nevada. It will be interesting to see if he can bounce back. As he has never really had a "bad" game, it will be intriguing to see what he does.
Next, can Boise State continue the success it found in the running game against the Wolfpack? Doug Martin ran just like Doug Martin last week. I hadn't seen that yet this year, and it was very nice to see.
Also, can the Broncos play less sloppy? All those penalties, dropped balls and interceptions were not like a Chris Petersen team.
If Boise State has its quarterback return to form, its running game continue to have success and the whole team playing like we are accustomed to seeing, I don't think Fresno State will stand a chance.
