College Football Picks Against the Spread: Bold Predictions for Week 6

Danny FlynnOct 4, 2011

There are a ton of matchups in Week 6 that will shape college football’s national title picture, as well as the race for the Heisman Trophy.

The Red River Rivalry showdown between Oklahoma and Texas is one of this week’s marquee matchups, but there are plenty of other important games that are worth keeping an eye on.

Here’s a look at a few picks for this weekend’s action.

Texas (+10)

1 of 5

Oklahoma’s offense has shined against a bunch of mediocre opponents. However, when QB Landry Jones and the Sooners went up against a quality Florida State defense, they struggled to get much going.

The offense has to be ready for a similar type of challenge from Texas this weekend. The Longhorns rank first in the Big 12 in both scoring defense and total defense.

Front seven players like Keenan Robinson, Emmanuel Acho, Alex Okafor and Kheeston Randall should be able to get to Jones and rattle him, but it’s up to the secondary to hold up its end of the bargain against Ryan Broyles and Kenny Stills.

Texas may not have enough offensive firepower to win this one, but the Longhorns have the defensive cogs to keep it close.

LSU (-13.5)

2 of 5

I know Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel has a ton of potential, I just hope that the LSU defense leaves him in one piece so he can meet it some day.

I’m not sure if you could dream up a less desirable situation for a young freshman quarterback to go into for the first start of his young career.

Hopefully, the Tigers won't be too hungry.

Northwestern (+7)

3 of 5

This weekend, the No. 12 Michigan Wolverines will take their act on the road for the first time this season, and they’ll be meeting with a rejuvenated Dan Persa.

Is the Michigan defense ready to go toe-to-toe with the Persa-led Northwestern offensive attack?

Bullying around teams in your own backyard is one thing; winning fights on the road is quite another.

Baylor (-15)

4 of 5

I know we can all bash Robert Griffin III for that terrible interception that all but handed the game to Kansas State last week, but if we’re going to do that, can we at least point out all the spectacular plays that the Baylor quarterback had leading up that throw?

Griffin was college football’s September superstar for a reason.

He has absolutely torched defenses, including Kansas State’s, and he’s already thrown for over 1,300 yards and 18 TDs.

I know the Iowa State defense has some gritty guys like LB Jake Knott, but the Cyclones just won’t be able to contain the Robert Griffin-Kendall Wright combination.

Oklahoma State (-31.5)

5 of 5

Kansas has resorted to wearing powder blue uniforms in some strange attempt to trick opponents.

The sad part is, the fashion switch still doesn’t change the fact that the Jayhawks are devoid of Big 12 quality talent.

What happens when you put the country’s 108th ranked secondary against Oklahoma State’s lethal passing attack, led by QB Brandon Weeden and WR Justin Blackmon?

I have a feeling Turner Gill doesn’t want to know the answer.
