Week 5 Waiver Wire: Matt Moore and 3 Desperate Moves That Will Take You Nowhere

Michael DixonOct 4, 2011

Four weeks into the fantasy season, how is your fantasy team looking? I can understand if you've had to scramble to replace injured stars like Jamaal Charles or Kenny Britt.

But there are some moves that while tempting, will only take you from bad to worse. The season isn't over yet. Working the waiver wire is fine. But before you do, think long and hard about who you're picking up, and who you're dropping.

These are moves that you need to avoid doing. If you find yourself in a position where you need to make these moves, this probably isn't your season.

Sign Matt Moore

Unless you're in an incredibly deep league or a league that uses multiple quarterbacks, don't let what's happening with Chad Henne make you think about signing Moore.

Given that Henne is only available in 38 percent of ESPN leagues, it's hard to imagine that your team really depended on him. So, shadowing him isn't really a worthwhile strategy.

Someone will still need to get the ball to Brandon Marshall. But other than the passes that go his way, I can't see much of a passing offense coming from Miami this year.

Leave Moore on the waiver wire.

One, he doesn't even play this week.

Two, we don't know how severe Henne's injury is.

Three, even if Moore takes every snap at QB for the rest of the year, he's not worthy of a spot on your fantasy team.

Drop Ben Roethisberger

We need to know about the severity of the injury before looking too far ahead with him, but nothing has come out that suggests that anyone should drop him.

We learned from Rotoworld that Roethlisberger isn't expected to miss any time.

I know that Roethlisberger hasn't been especially effective this year. His yardage totals are bad and he's thrown a lot of interceptions and not a lot of touchdown passes.

Still, Roethlisberger is a great cold weather quarterback. He takes a lot of hits, but still manages to have good totals on nearly a weekly basis.

Roethlisberger's production will come this year. If you have a good backup, I can understand leaving him on the bench. But anything more than that is a knee-jerk reaction that will cost you a lot in crunch time.

I have actually learned how bad this is first hand. When Jamaal Charles went down, Thomas Jones became a trendy acquisition. Now, two weeks into the action, he's just not doing it.

You can go on a week to week basis here. It may make some sense to pick Jones up in a week where you feel that he'll get a few vulture touchdowns.

But if he doesn't score, he won't get anywhere near the yardage to make up for it. He can't be a weekly starter for you. Look to other options, like Kendall Hunter.
