College Football Rankings: 5 Reasons Why Wisconsin Can Snap SEC BCS Title Streak
Wisconsin has been flat-out demolishing opponents thus far in 2011. The Badgers are scoring an average of 48 points while giving up just 10.
Russell Wilson has stolen the spotlight, and yet, there is still enough to go around for Montee Ball, James White and Nick Toon. And of course you can’t forget about the Wisconsin offensive line which is always one of the best in the country.
The SEC has won the past six BCS National Championships, but if Wisconsin has it their way, they’ll break that streak this season.
Here’s why.
Schedule
1 of 5Outside of Illinois, Wisconsin does not play a team currently ranked in the Top 25. The only easier schedule of the national title contenders is Boise State.
Sure, they will have to play in the Big Ten championship game against a likely ranked opponent, but the Badgers should be heavy favorites over any competition both in the other division and the entire Big Ten.
Run Game
2 of 5Teams that can run the ball well in the red zone will always have the upper hand, and that is true for Wisconsin. They are just beasts at running the football, and they are absolutely relentless at it.
Montee Ball is averaging over 100 yards per game and has yet to score less than two touchdowns in a game including four last week against Nebraska. That’s incredible.
Russell Wilson
3 of 5The other main contenders don’t have a dual-threat quarterback who can escape under pressure. Wilson gives the Badgers a level of offensive complexity they have not had in quite some time.
And he’s been incredibly efficient with his arm, ranking second in the nation in passing efficiency while throwing for 280 yards per game. Teams may be able to stop one aspect of Wisconsin’s offense but not both.
Paul Chryst
4 of 5Offensive coordinator Paul Chryst has absolutely flourished with Wisconsin. His offense has always ranked in the top half of the country and only averaged under 30 points per game in two of his six seasons while at Wisconsin. Those seasons the Badgers averaged 27 and 29 points.
Chryst had an outstanding offer from Texas to become their offensive coordinator, but he turned the job down. You can bet Wisconsin fans are grateful that he did.
Defense
5 of 5The Badgers are only allowing 10 points per game and have yet to give up more than 17 points.
They held a great Nebraska offense to just 335 yards on offense which is amazing since they were averaging 439 yards and 42 points per game heading into it. Wisconsin also got three interceptions, and they are now 24th in the country in turnover margin.
If anyone outside the SEC has a shot of winning the national championship, it may be Wisconsin
