Premier League Team of the Week: Lampard, Sturridge, Parker, Agbonlahor and More

Ed WymanOct 3, 2011

With all the recent furor over Carlos Tevez's actions in Munich, it was important for the Premier League to have an exciting, football-based weekend with plenty of exciting games to keep the fans interested for the right reasons.

The Premiership certainly came up trumps.

Fulham recorded a huge 6-0 win against QPR, their first win of the season, Chelsea trounced Bolton 5-1, Manchester City heaped more pain on Steve Kean with a 4-0 win, Tottenham got one over on Arsenal with a 2-1 win. Liverpool saw off Everton 2-0 in a heated fixture.

Elsewhere, Swansea ran out 2-0 winners against Stoke, Newcastle retained their undefeated record with a 2-1 win over Wolves, Aston Villa did the same with a 2-0 win over Wigan, Manchester United held on to the top spot with an uncomfortable 2-0 win over Norwich and Sunderland and West Brom played out an exciting 2-2 draw.

So, with all those goals, who has made it in to the team of the week? The team lines up in a 4-3-3 formation.

GK Tim Krul

1 of 11

Tim Krul is the reason Newcastle United currently occupy a Champions League place. He has been outstanding all season, and last weekend was no different.

An impressive save from a free kick, a save with his feet after being wrong-footed and an awesome double save, first with his feet and then with a full stretch dive, were just a few of the highlights of Krul's hugely influential display.

If it wasn't for Krul's inspirational performance, there is no way that Newcastle would have walked away victors.

Just 23 years old, Krul has the speed and agility of a youthful goalkeeper, but the wisdom and understanding of a far more-experienced goalkeeper.

LB Jose Enrique

2 of 11

Jose Enrique's move to Liverpool has really paid off, both for him and Liverpool.

The Spaniard has quickly established himself as one of the divisions best left-backs and has put in the kind of displays that the Merseyside club will need if they are to reclaim a Champions League berth for next season.

Everton had 10 men for most of the match, but Enrique still had to deal with a few Everton attacks; they didn't cause him too much of a problem. He tackled and attacked with confidence, providing both security and a second option to Downing on the left wing.

The left-back has made several team-of-the-week appearances, and Liverpool will hope that he is able to keep up the same form he has showed so far; he has easily been Anfield's best defender this season.

CB Garry Monk

3 of 11

Swansea are yet to concede at home, a record that owes a lot to Garry Monk. He was a calm and reliable presence against Stoke and did not allow them to pose the same threat they had against Manchester United a week earlier.

Monk kept Peter Crouch out of the game and used all his experience from years in the Football League playing against side's like Stoke to comfortably deal with every attack.

He and Ashley Williams look to have a solid partnership at centre-back. It could well be the difference between survival and relegation.

CB David Luiz

4 of 11

In his first Premier League start of the season, David Luiz did plenty to help his case for a permanent berth in the starting lineup.

The Brazilian was composed at the back, and, although he was far from busy, coped with everything Bolton brought against him.

He really came to the fore when bringing the ball forward. He was more than willing to take advantage of the space Bolton afforded him; on one occasion he carried the ball almost the full length of the pitch before firing off a shot.

Luiz will be desperate to get a run of games, at centre- or right-back. He looked comfortable in both roles, the type of versatility that is only going to get more valuable as the season goes on.

RB Kyle Walker

5 of 11

Kyle Walker has come into his own this season with a couple of impressive performances. Sunday's victory over Arsenal was better still for the Englishman.

He scored an absolute screamer, a long-range drive that Wojciech Scezney could only get a hand to as it flew into the bottom corner of his net.

It was a goal the right-back fully deserved. He was a huge source of danger on the right flank against an Arsenal defence that looked out of its depth at times, but he did not sacrifice his defensive responsibilities in his best defensive performance to date.

Walker's reward for all that? A call up to the England squad. He'll be hoping he gets to feature this time around; two previous summons have not resulted in a cap for the 21-year-old.

CM Scott Parker

6 of 11

Scott Parker provided White Hart Lane with yet another impressive performance as he rapidly justifies his move across London.

The midfielder worked well as an enforcer, breaking up plays and making several perfectly timed tackles, as he provided the solidity required for Spurs' attacking play to flourish.

At the same time, Parker was confident in possession, not afraid to spend time on the ball and wait for the right pass.

He probably should have scored after his own good work resulted in a through-ball he could have done more with, but for the rest of the afternoon he was faultless, linking well with Luka Modric and constantly hassling Arsenal's midfielders.

CM Frank Lampard

7 of 11

Plenty have suggested that "Super Frank" is past it, allegations aided by his recent omissions from Chelsea's starting lineups and his reduced role in the England squad.

The veteran of 350 Premier League matches with Chelsea put all that to one side as he showed us all what he is still capable of, with a hat trick that took him to fifth on Chelsea's all-time top-scorers' list.

The hat trick consisted of two neat finishes and a tap-in that exhibited his quick reactions and good attacking instincts.

His third score showed that he still has the quick feet and perfectly weighted passing ability on which his game relies, as he played an intricate one-two with Didier Drogba to find space to get a shot off.

He may be 33 years old, but Lampard is far from past it. There will be tougher opposition than Bolton, but Lampard still has an important role to play, for Chelsea and England.

CM Danny Murphy

8 of 11

Fulham's veteran midfielder and captain was central to Fulham's systematic demolition of QPR. He scored the second goal, a penalty, with a well-placed shot that sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, while his quick thinking from a free kick played in Andy Johnson for a goal that must have embarrassed newly promoted QPR.

Murphy controlled the midfield, playing in the three-pronged attack in front of him on several occasions, and kept his side calm by slowing down, or speeding up, the tempo as required.

Fulham had not recorded a win this season before their 6-0 triumph, but that they now have a win, and a big one at that, under their belt is largely down to the influence of the former Liverpool regular.

ST Gabriel Agbonlahor

9 of 11

Gabriel Agbonlahor helped keep his side's undefeated record intact with another fine display that helped prove he is back to his best.

His devastating pace on the left wing was simply too much for the Wigan defence, as he mounted countless runs, beating defenders with ease. He scored exactly the type of goal he is known for, cutting in from the wing and firing off a shot that was too powerful for the goalkeeper to deal with.

Alex McLeish seems to be getting the most out of the 24year-old, who is showing a great deal of confidence. He is doing it all with a bad back that, according to Yahoo! Sports, kept him out of the current England squad.

If he can get that problem fixed and keep up the form he shown, there is little doubt he will be in contention for Euro 2012.

ST Daniel Sturridge

10 of 11

Daniel Sturridge enjoyed a productive spell at the Reebok Stadium last season, scoring eight goals in 12 games for the club, and he continued his good form at the stadium with an all-around impressive display that also saw him grab two goals.

The striker worked hard to find some space for his first goal, a well-directed free header, and got a bit lucky with some poor goalkeeping for his second. However, the skill he showed to get free of his defender and get his shot off was impressive.

He did not just score; Sturridge provided Frank Lampard with the assist for his first goal and worked hard throughout. He was not afraid to track back and help out in defence; he made an important challenge and clearance late in the game.

Sturridge is competing against some very big names for game time at Chelsea, but if he can keep getting goals when he gets the chance to play, one of the more experienced strikers might just find himself marginalised.

ST Andrew Johnson

11 of 11

Andy Johnson grabbed his first Premier League hat trick with a superb display as he led Fulham's front-line with great success.

Johnson's first was the classic striker's goal. He pounced on a rebound before anyone could react and applied the calm finish that was required. Bobby Zamora's excellent work and Johnson's positioning got him his second goal, and a perfectly timed run allowed him to finish off his hat trick.

Johnson was a menace throughout. He almost scored a spectacular volley, won his side's penalty and provided the cross from which Clint Dempsey scored his goal.

If the former Crystal Palace man manages to stay fit, he could be in for a very productive season.
