Michael Vick: Vince Young a Better Option for Eagles Than Crumbling Vick

David DanielsOct 2, 2011

An injured Michael Vick doesn’t give the Philadelphia Eagles the best chance to win; a healthy Vince Young does, though.

Now, Young isn’t at his physical peak returning to the depth chart for the first time this season after a hamstring injury, but at least the former Texas Longhorn’s upper body is in one piece. After injuring his non-throwing hand last week, Vick hurt his left hand early against the San Francisco 49ers, and it would be wise for the Eagles to give their Pro Bowl QB a breather.

First off, Philadelphia doesn’t even need a healthy Vick vs. a team like the 49ers. San Francisco may be 2-1, but they’ve beaten weak competition. Even if the 49ers were a threat, though, the Eagles still should play Young instead of a Michael Vick with two bad hands.

Young improved greatly as a passer last season. He threw 10 touchdowns to just three interceptions, the best TD to INT ratio of his career by far. VY finished the season with a 98.6 passer rating and was benched because of immaturity, not poor play.

And, of course, Young is a proven winner. What he lacks in maturity he makes up for with elite composure in crunch time. Young may not put up big numbers through the air, but he’s one of the most clutch quarterbacks in the league.

Vick can only do so much with two bad hands, and he hasn't played like the MVP candidate that quarterbacked Philly last year anyway. Young can run the Eagles high-powered offense to its fullest potential. He definitely never had weapons like DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Steve Smith and Brent Celek to get the ball downfield to with the Tennessee Titans.

Not that the Eagles are in any danger of losing to the 49ers either way, but Young is the better choice right now under center over a Michael Vick who will be in a body cast by the end of the day.
