UFC on Versus 6 Results: 6 Fights That Should Be Made Now

Tim McTiernanOct 2, 2011

On Saturday night, Dominick Cruz did what everyone expected, and he won a unanimous decision victory over "Mighty Mouse" Demetrious Johnson.

The next fight for Cruz will come as no surprise, as there is a fight that's already scheduled to be a No. 1 contender bout.

As far as the other guys on the main card, half need rebound fights, and half need fights to keep them moving up the ladder.

Read on to check out six fights that should be made now.

Anthony Johnson vs. Thiago Alves/Papi Abedi Winner

1 of 6

For argument's sake, let's say that Alves defeats Abedi at UFC 138.

Would they have this fight at middleweight, just for the sake of the two fighters?

They are both known as two of the biggest welterweights in the division, and they both cut a lot of weight to make the 170-pound limit.

Both are devastating strikers with knockout power, and have a solid ground game.

Should this happen, don't expect to see much of the ground game, though.

Charlie Brenneman vs. Paulo Thiago

2 of 6

Charlie Brenneman was defeated last night, as many people expected.

The win over Rick Story was big for Brenneman, but a fight with "Rumble" was just too much too soon.

A fight with Paulo Thiago would be good, as Thiago is looking to re-establish himself as a top-tier welterweight and Brenneman needs to rebound after the KO loss to Johnson.

Pat Barry vs. Mark Hunt

3 of 6

Barry is now 3-4 in his UFC career, and things aren't looking too bright for him.

He has dropped fights to Tim Hague, Mirko Cro Cop, Cheick Kongo and Stefan Struve.

He is a fan favorite, so he won't be cut from the UFC yet, but another loss and Uncle Dana may have no choice.

A fight with Mark Hunt would be a good one for Barry to get back on track, and can you talk about a hell of a kickboxing match?

Stefan Struve vs. Cheick Kongo/ Matt Mitrione Winner

4 of 6

Stefan Struve has continued his roller coaster ride through the UFC heavyweight division, as he had another impressive showing coming off a loss.

Every time Struve has been matched against a top contender, he's fallen short, and it's been by (T)KO in the first round every time.

A matchup with the winner of Cheick Kongo and Matt Mitrione will be to see who truly is the gatekeeper in the heavyweight division.

Demetrious Johnson vs. Joseph Benavidez

5 of 6

As Sal DeRose said, "Does this fight happen at bantamweight or at flyweight for the inaugural UFC flyweight championship?"

Johnson and Benavidez are two of the smallest bantamweights on the UFC roster, and both have stated that a drop to flyweight could be in their respective futures.

Maybe now that Johnson won't be challenging Cruz for the title, and Benavidez has already been beaten by Cruz twice, they will add the flyweight division.

I'd rather see a tournament format to crown the flyweight champion, but I certainly wouldn't complain if these two fought for the belt right away.

Dominick Cruz vs. Urijah Faber/ Brian Bowles Winner

6 of 6

No real surprise here, as it's already been announced that the winner of the Urijah Faber-Brian Bowles matchup will be for the No. 1 contender position in the bantamweight division.

Cruz has already beaten both of these men, but he is 1-1 in his career with Faber, and they put on a fight of the year candidate when they met up at UFC 132, so I think most people are hoping Faber comes out on top.

Should Bowles come out on top, expect their title fight to be a co-main event on an event in the future.
