Arsenal News: Arsene Wenger Says Club Needs 90+ Points

Ashish WesleyFeb 5, 2008

Another boring day at the office for me.  But I'm sure you don't want to hear about that.

Instead, let's get to Arsene Wenger's assessment of the points Arsenal must amass by May.  "We have 60 now and that is phenomenal.  I don't know how much will be needed but it looks it will be around the 90s."

With the win over Man City last weekend, Arsenal has 60 points.  This means we'll have to secure at least 30 of the remaining 39 points.  That doesn't sound too bad, does it?

On a cautionary note, however, we have yet to play Manchester United and the Chumps at Chelski at their respective home grounds.  Liverpool at Ashburton Grove will bring another potentially tough matchup.  The complete run in is here

Taking a closer look at the schedule, you will notice that all play between the 3rd week of March and the 2nd week of April will be absolutely pivotal.  This period has us up against Chelski, Liverpool, and Manchester with virtually back-to-back contests in the premiership—all this while we play champions league quarter-finals (if, indeed, we get that far).

I'm not going so far as to say it's going to be a make-or-break period of play.  Honestly I could see Arsenal securing five out of the nine points against the other Top Three in the premiership, and that wouldn't be a bad return at all.

If we do get a minimum of five points, that would be enough to get us on track for title.  And if memory serves, we have a much easier run in comparison to Manchester's last few weeks of the premiership.

Anyway, let's leave it there and not get ahead of ourselves.

Chelski is just six points behind Arsenal in contention for the premiership, and former gunner Anelka—who now wears the Chelski blue—says that they cannot be discounted from the race, and I'm sure all of you will agree.

Once they have Dogba back from the ACN and Essien and whoever else they are missing, they could make for a very formidable outfit.  They have a certain resolve—they're not easy on the eye at all—but they've been effective so far, and will be further strengthened by the return of players from the ACN.

As far as news from Manchester United, it looks like if you can shut out Cristiano Ronaldo, you shut up the whole team and their geriatric coach.  Their goal threat at the moment is quite limited, but they too have players who could step up at any moment and deliver.

So as you can see, it's all a bit up in the air right now.  One thing is for sure, it will be a fight to the finish and Arsenal will have to come out with guns blazing, just like that Judas Priest track!

The Flamster is the latest to jump on the bandwagon in praise of the Togolese beanpole we call Ade-bayoooor at Arsenal: "Emmanuel is unbelievable at the moment—he is scoring in every game.  He is showing he is one of the best strikers in the world and we need him to keep going until the end of the season."

Speaking of Mathieu, this is worrying.  I don't have anymore news on this at the moment, but will update once more is known.

Flamini's partner in crime at the center of the park, Cescy, goes on to question Barcelona's use of Thierry Henry, who is played wide left instead of his position upfront, leading the line.  Fabregas says also that he would like to face Barca in the CL final (Wouldn't we all?).

Untold Arsenal has a piece on what The Geriatric's diary would look like, and it's quite funny indeed.

Theo scored a good goal in the U21s on his return to St. Mary's against the Republic of Ireland.  More on this here.

These reports (here and here) suggest that we may just be in for a slightly easier ride against Milan in the CL, as they may be without Pato and Gattuso...not that I'm particularly worried or anything!

Clichy rounds this off with his joy in being called up to the French squad: “It is a child’s dream that I am achieving.  I know I wasn’t far from being called up and now I’m there. It means that we should never be desperate for it."

And that will have to do for now.  So long!
