LSU Football: Odds on Which Team Will End the Tigers' Undefeated Season

Sean MerrimanOct 1, 2011

The No. 1-ranked LSU Tigers have been as close to flawless as a college football team could be throughout the first four weeks of the season.

After opening the year with a convincing 40-27 win over Oregon and following that up with three more wins, two of which have come against ranked teams, the Tigers look to have the makeup of a National Championship-caliber team.

With a current 4-0 record, LSU has eight games remaining on its regular-season schedule, including the much-anticipated matchup against No.3-ranked Alabama on Nov. 5.

But will that be the game most likely to end the Tigers' unbeaten streak?

Let's take a look at the odds on which team will end LSU's undefeated season.

Kentucky

1 of 8

Kentucky is often an afterthought when it comes to SEC football, and that story is much the same this season.

The Wildcats are 2-2 heading into Saturday's matchup against LSU and have not looked good in any of their four games up to this point. They survived two narrow-margin victories early on against Western Kentucky and Central Michigan, who are a combined 1-6 this season.

Kentucky followed that up with a loss to an average Louisville team, then a blowout loss to Florida last weekend.

Remember the last time these two teams met in 2007 and an unbeaten LSU squad stumbled in Kentucky, losing 43-37 in triple overtime on a last-second Hail Mary pass.

Yeah, don't expect that again this year.

Odds: 100-1

Florida

2 of 8

Florida has looked very impressive this season, racing out to a 4-0 mark.

But we will all know a lot more about the Gators and just how good they are after this weekend when they host No. 3-ranked Alabama at The Swamp.

Quarterback John Brantley looks much improved from last season, and the one-two running back punch of Jeffrey Demps and Chris Rainey looks to be one of the best in the country.

But will Florida really be able to run against this dominant LSU defensive font?

The fact that this game is being played in Baton Rouge certainly makes it less likely that the Gators could be the one to spoil LSU's unbeaten season.

Odds: 6-1

Tennessee

3 of 8

Tennessee is one of those teams that seems to live in the past.

Everyone expects the Vols to be good and have that breakout year, but since the Peyton Manning and Tee Martin days came to an end, that breakout year just hasn't seemed to come.

Tennessee currently sits at 2-1 heading into an easy matchup against Buffalo this weekend. They should be 4-1 heading into the LSU game on Oct. 15.

Having this game at home certainly helps their chances, but LSU is just too good to let this one slip away.

Odds: 8-1

Auburn

4 of 8

Remember how good this game was last year?

LSU marched into Auburn and gave the national champs all they could handle last season, but it ended in a close 24-17 loss to the Blue and Orange.

The difference this year is that Cam Newton is out of the picture, which favors LSU in a big way.

Auburn does not look impressive thus far, which became more than obvious after a narrow win over Utah State and a 14-point loss to Clemson.

LSU should march on in this one.

Odds: 25-1

Alabama

5 of 8

This game is still more than a month away, and it is already by far the most anticipated matchup of the college football season.

Could you imagine how hyped it will be if both of these teams remain undefeated?

LSU, currently ranked No. 1 in the country, will travel to Tuscaloosa to take on the No. 3-ranked Tide on Nov. 5. But who will come out on top?

Both of these two teams are so similar it's almost scary. Both are run-first teams on offense, but have quarterbacks who are capable of making throws when necessary.

And both of these teams feature dominant defenses that are, no question, the top two units in the country this season.

Playing on the road will not be easy, and if there is one team that is going to knock off LSU this year, you would have to assume it will be Alabama.

Odds: 3-1

Western Kentucky

6 of 8

Put it this way: The odds of ESPN not mentioning LeBron James during the NBA season (assuming there is a season), are about the same odds that Western Kentucky goes into Baton Rouge and ends the Tigers' undefeated season.

The Hilltoppers are 0-3 heading into this weekend with three blowout losses, including a recent 44-16 shellacking by Indiana State.

I could write more about why Western Kentucky isn't going to beat LSU, but you get the point by now.

Odds: 1,000-1

Ole Miss

7 of 8

Being at the end of the season and being on the road, normally this could be looked at as a potential trap game for LSU.

But the issue is that Ole Miss is not very good this year—and that's being generous.

The Rebels are 1-3 heading into this weekend and were blown out by Vanderbilt in Week 3. Quarterback Zack Stoudt has thrown just two touchdowns compared to six interceptions through four games this season.

This one should be all LSU.

Odds: 25-1

Arkansas

8 of 8

Arkansas is an interesting team and probably the most difficult team to predict on LSU's schedule.

The Tigers close out the regular season with a home matchup against the No. 18-ranked Razorbacks.

But which Arkansas team will show up, will be the big question.

Will it be the team that outscored Missouri State and Mexico 104-10 in its first two games of the season?

Or will it be the team that completely flopped in a 38-14 blowout to Alabama?

Arkansas loves to air it out, but that won't be an option against LSU, which features the best secondary in the nation.

LSU should roll in this late-season matchup.

Odds: 15-1
