WWE: 6 Reasons Sheamus Is the Future of SmackDown

Daniel MasseySep 29, 2011

Sheamus has attempted to become a main player on WWE SmackDown since the draft in April.

After a career lull, the two-time WWE Champion is now looking to establish himself as a main event superstar once again.

I believe that, along with Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes, he truly is the future of SmackDown.

Born in 1978, Sheamus is only 33 years of age and has at least five more years left in him as an active competitor.

I have listed six reasons I believe Sheamus is the future of SmackDown. Enjoy!

The Right Look

1 of 6

Sheamus has the look that WWE is high on.

He is well built and rather tall, billed at 6’6’’. However, despite having these generic features, Sheamus has a unique look, as he does not tan his skin as other wrestlers do.

His pasty appearance makes him stand out from the crowd and gives him an image that prevents him from being lost in the shuffle.

His hair is also a main feature of his appearance, and, coupled with his beard, his ginger mane contrasts against his pale skin to create an image that is hard to forget, in a good way.

A wrestler must have a decent image if he is to be successful; this was proved when Dolph Ziggler dyed his hair brown, becoming generic after losing his bleached blond locks.

Sheamus has the look of a main player.

A Unique Gimmick

To compliment his unique look, Sheamus also has a unique gimmick.

Shying away from the Irish stereotypes that plague the media, Sheamus portrays a Celtic Warrior. Based on his Irish heritage, this immediately makes me take him more seriously than an Irish wrestler who relies on leprechauns, four leaved clovers and other stereotypes.

It moves him away from the comedic aspect of his heritage and focuses on his strong-willed, warrior instincts.

This unique gimmick is also beneficial to Sheamus as the future main event star of SmackDown, as it gives the fans something to invest in. Every top wrestler has a gimmick of some sort—The Viper, The Rattlesnake, Y2J, The Cerebral Assassin—need I go on?

Sheamus’ gimmick fits the bill here.

The Correct Development

When Sheamus debuted, he became a two-time WWE Champion within a year.

He then hit a new low, as reports surfaced that the WWE higher-ups were not happy with him. He went on a huge losing streak after winning King of the Ring, was given ridiculous attire and forced to be called "King Sheamus."

However, he then won the United States Championship when he put his career on the line, and ever since then, Sheamus has been on a slow build back to the top.

Now, I am a big Sheamus mark and I would love to see him as World Heavyweight Champion now, but I realise that would be detrimental to his build up and therefore, his character.

This slow development is perfect for making Sheamus the main man on SmackDown, and the three following reasons will explain more.

Winning over the Fans

4 of 6

Winning over the fans whether you are a face or a heel shows how successful you are at cutting promos and portraying your character.

Over the past few months, Sheamus has done a really good job of silencing his doubters and winning over the fans he lost when he became King of the Ring; gaining ones that never respected him before. In this respect, it could be argued that SmackDown has helped him as much as he has helped SmackDown as it has allowed him to flourish.

If the fans were not invested in his character, then he would not be able to be considered the future of SmackDown, or his career would go downhill as it did when people did not care for him as WWE Champion.

Just for the record, I did.

He Is a Believable Threat

5 of 6

Due to the aforementioned reasons, Sheamus has become a viable threat to the World Heavyweight Championship, and indeed, any man who steps in his way.

If he was not a believable threat, then SmackDown would stand no chance, and the previously mentioned reasons would all fall apart at the seams.

I would definitely believe now that Sheamus could beat Mark Henry for his title if he was feuding with him, but I wouldn’t have done this time last year after Sheamus won King of the Ring.

This is possibly the most important point in the slideshow.

Feuds

6 of 6

The final point I’d like to address is that of feuds. Sheamus can feud with pretty much anyone.

The ability to feud with a wide variety of superstars is essential if one is to become a top man on SmackDown—I’d know.

His feud with Daniel Bryan was really underrated, his recent feud with Mark Henry helped him to win over his audience and propel Mark Henry into the World Heavyweight Championship picture and his upcoming feud with Christian is looking likely to steal the show.

By proving he can have successful feuds with all these superstars, he is proving he will be able to take on all-comers when he eventually becomes the top guy on SmackDown.
