WWE Hell in a Cell: Is This CM Punk's Last Chance at the WWE Title?

Tom ClarkSep 30, 2011

When it comes to CM Punk and the unbelievable roll he’s been on since the night of his infamous promo, it occurs to me that there are two sides of this guy.

Two sides of Punk, the character, the man who dared to thumb his nose at the WWE corporate machine and decided to play by his own rules.  Two sides of an angle that has redefined what it means to be “real” in the business.

One side of Punk is the competitor.  He has paid his dues, done everything needed to be considered one of the best in the industry.  He has made it to WWE, a level that many thought he was not cut out for, a company that did not push workers of his kind.  He did it in spite of his critics.

Punk, with his tattoos and sly grin, looks more like a rock star than he does a pro wrestler, and he undoubtedly relishes that fact.  Why?

Because he likes being overlooked, underrated and dismissed.  When that happens to him, it does nothing but fuel his desire to get better.  He is the best in the world, and he got there by working harder than everyone else in the locker room.

Nothing was handed to him.  He was never crowned as the next big star, or given an easy way in.  He earned his way in, and he continues to do what’s necessary to keep the spot he worked so hard to get.

In Punk’s mind, there is no one on the roster that he cannot beat, no challenge too big, for him to overcome.  After all, the hard part was getting to the top.  Now, he gets to use his talents on the worldwide stage of WWE, to prove that he belongs right where he is.

That WWE Title belongs to him, he’s paid for it with blood sweat and tears.  He’s the only man who truly deserves it.

The other side of Punk?  The revolutionary.

The rebel in him doesn’t care about the WWE Title.  In fact, he could care less.

The belt is only worth what the company puts into it, and he knows that if he wins it again, that they will do anything it takes to get it off of him.  Triple H does not want him to have it, and would go to any length to stop him from wearing the gold again.

After all, they have done it before.  Right, Nash?

The belt is not the point.  The point is to rock the boat, to stir the storm, to get fans talking about change.  That is the atmosphere that he flourishes in.  Besides, his career is gong just fine without the WWE Championship.  He can take it whenever he wants it, but until he can cause the change in WWE that he needs so desperately, he’s better off without it.

Until his agenda has been fulfilled, and the right people removed from power, he is content with being the spokesmen for the fans who too, want real change in WWE.  That’s his role, and he plays it better than anyone.

The problem?  The clock may be ticking down for both sides of CM Punk.

Storyline wise, Punk’s second chance at the WWE Title came rather unexpectedly, and thanks to Triple H, the man who Punk initially believed was plotting against him.  So, with that being the case, does that mean that Punk is in for an ambush at the pay per view?

Hunter placing Punk in the Cell could be strategy, trapping him long enough for the C.O.O to send someone in to once again screw Punk out of the WWE Title.  It seems like a stretch, since both men have apparently called a truce, but make no mistake, no one can embarrass Triple H the way Punk has, without repercussions.

For CM Punk, Stone Cold’s old catchphrase has never been more true than it is right now.

DTA.  Don’t Trust Anybody.

Is time ticking away for CM Punk?  Has everything up to this point been a countdown to the moment when he is left lying, a victim of the machine that he has been raging against for so long?

If so, who will be the man to pull the trigger?  Will it indeed be Triple H?  Or will it be the man that CM Punk accused of being a sell-out, the man who is the company’s golden boy?

John Cena’s very identity is wrapped up in the WWE Championship.  It is as much a part of him as he is a part of it.  How far would he go to keep the strap, and his place, in the company?

For Punk's character, Hell in a Cell could very well be his last chance at the WWE Title.  If the powers that be have their way, it could be his last night in the company.  For him to overcome, both of his sides must work together.
