College Football Picks Week 5: Florida and 3 Teams That Will Tumble in Top 25
Although many questions were answered regarding college football's balance of power last weekend, things are about to get a lot clearer, as four games will pit Top-25 teams against each other. While it may not affect the teams currently in contention for the National Championship, the BCS picture in general may be muddled.
With conference play heating up as well, this weekend will set the tone for which teams jump out ahead of the field and which teams will be playing catch up within their respective conferences. Here are three teams that will fall precipitously down the Top 25 this week and will be behind the eight ball in their conference too.
Clemson Tigers
The Clemson Tigers have claimed back-to-back big wins after beating then-No. 11 Florida State last week and then-No. 21 Auburn the previous week. The Tigers have been anchored by the spectacular play of dual-threat quarterback Tajh Boyd, who has thrown for 1,255 yards and 13 scores in just four games.
While Clemson has victimized a couple solid teams to date, the sledding will be much tougher against the No. 11 Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday. Admittedly, the Hokies haven't played overly stiff competition to date, but as always, they boast one of the nation's toughest defenses.
Having given up just 10 points per game, the Hokies are a tough nut to crack. Seeing as Clemson's defense isn't overly impressive in its own right, Boyd will have to have a huge game in order for the Tigers to win. I don't see that happening against Virginia Tech.
Arkansas Razorbacks
Even without former quarterback Ryan Mallett after his departure for the NFL, the No. 18 Arkansas Razorbacks were flying high to start the season with Tyler Wilson at the helm. After big wins over three cupcake opponents, though, Arkansas was dealt a dose of reality by the Alabama Crimson Tide last week.
Alabama held Arkansas' high-octane offense to just 14 points and hung a crooked 38 points on their questionable defense. The Razorbacks will have another tough this week when they travel to take on the No. 14 Texas A&M Aggies and their vaunted 12th man.
The Aggies lost a tough one to a very impressive Oklahoma State team last week, but they remain a very complete squad capable of competing with the country's best teams. Neither Arkansas or Texas A&M has proven that they can beat a legitimate BCS team yet, but because of a defensive advantage, the Aggies should take this one.
Florida Gators
After a somewhat disappointing five-loss 2010 season, the No. 12 Florida Gators have bounced back in a big way in 2011. The Gators have jumped out to a 4-0 start, with three of those wins being blowouts (the other being a 10-point win over Tennessee).
Quarterback John Brantley has settled in nicely, thanks mostly to an unforgiving running attack behind Chris Rainey and Jeff Demps. Florida has yet to face a top-flight defense, and that is exactly what the No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide possess.
The Tide rank second in the nation in total defense, as they have given up just eight points per game despite having already faced two ranked teams. Whichever team takes this game will automatically become LSU's biggest competition in the SEC, and I expect that team to be Alabama.
