WWE Hell in a Cell 2011: Will Kevin Nash Play a Role in the WWE Title Match?

Tom ClarkJun 7, 2018

Is it really over?

Kevin Nash has been MIA since taking a sledgehammer shot from his former best friend and boss Triple H at WWE Night of Champions. There’s been no sign of the big man, and it looks as though his part in the angle with CM Punk and Hunter could have come to an end. At this point, there’s no real reason to believe that he will be a factor at the upcoming Hell in a Cell pay-per-view. He’s likely done.

So, is it really over?

Pardon my continued insistence on questioning the WWE product, but when it comes to Nash and his booking in this little triangle, there has not exactly been that much to be impressed with.

Okay, the story so far, in case you’re not familiar with it:

Following Punk’s WWE title win over John Cena at SummerSlam, he was surprise-attacked by Nash, who gave him the jackknife power bomb. Over the course of the next few weeks, Nash claimed that Hunter sent a text asking him to take out the winner at SummerSlam. Triple H denied it, Punk thought he was lying and then he ripped on Stephanie McMahon with a smile on his face.

Nash faked a car accident to screw Punk out of a WWE title shot, Hunter revealed that it was really Nash who sent the text to himself and the recently announced CM Punk-Kevin Nash match was changed to Triple H and CM Punk. Nash attacked both Hunter and Punk, was fired for his actions and dishonesty, then showed up at Night of Champions, taking the aforementioned sledgehammer shot from Triple H.

Breathe, Tom, breathe.

Sound confusing? Yeah, it really was. It was a mess.

It had potential, though. It started out well, the mystery behind who could be pulling the strings was fun to speculate about and I should know—I was one of the guys doing just that for Bleacher Report. It had all the makings of a classic WWE whodunit.

But, much like the “Anonymous” Raw General Manager, none of it really came together, and before you knew it, the storyline was less about who was behind the scenes than who was not behind the scenes. After a while, it was obvious that there just wasn’t anyone pulling the strings like we all thought.

So, what’s changed now? What would possibly lead any of us to believe that WWE Creative would return to this angle that fizzled out once before?

Simple: CM Punk has set it up already.

By admitting on Raw that he believed there indeed is a conspiracy that exists to keep him and Hunter at odds, CM Punk has opened the door for Kevin Nash to return once again.

Scratch that, he kicked the door open.

How? Because, once the face says it, then it likely has some merit.

It’s one thing for a heel like Christian, The Miz or R-Truth to claim that everyone’s out to get them, that somewhere in the shadows lurk unseen forces who are plotting to destroy them. It’s paranoid garbage, just a way for the heel in question to appear perhaps a little unhinged, blaming everyone but themselves for their own shortcomings.

But, when a guy like Punk states on TV that he believes as well, then it changes everything. Now, instead of the crazy conspiracy theories coming from a delusional heel, the idea is being thrown out from arguably the most popular guy in the company.

Does he have your attention now?

So, now we’re back to Kevin Nash, the guy whose very existence in this angle screams conspiracy. Still think that he’s out of the picture?

When all of this first went down back at SummerSlam, many of us thought that it was just a sneak peek of something larger growing, just under the surface. Now that the notion has been legitimized by Punk on the air, there is only one thing left for us to do.

Let the conspiracy theories begin. Again.
