Arsenal FC: How Should Gunners Fans Feel After 3-0 Win Against Bolton?

Rohan SubraJun 5, 2018

A Robin van Persie brace and a nice goal from Alex Song were the highlights in Arsenal's much-needed win against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday. Though Arsene Wenger's side won, many Gooners were rejoicing, while others were deeming the three points as nothing special.

The question is, how should fans feel after the match?

Well, first let's look at the positives:

It certainly was a confidence boost that the team needed. After having four points in five games, the players finally had something to be proud of, and it will most likely help their morale.

Mikel Arteta is turning out to be a good signing, as he has been playing incisive passes and leading the team—though not as effectively as Cesc Fabregas. Of course, Aaron Ramsey did perform quite well, too.

Wojciech Szczesny is looking like one of the best keepers in the Premier League. After having to step up last year, Szczesny has matured into a great shot-stopper, as well as a leader for the Gunners.

And Alex Song's goal showed that the Cameroonian, who was believed to never be a threat on offense, is developing his skills to become a more versatile player.

Another positive thing to draw from that match is the fact that Arsenal didn't have to play really well to win; they didn't even perform that well. Of course, they didn't play like they did against Manchester United, but it wasn't a top game. Wenger and the players will probably feel like they did quite well converting their chances and seizing opportunities.

And no doubt, there is Robin van Persie.

The double from van Persie was the talking point of the match, and it was being discussed in Premier League context, too. For a while before, it looked like the Dutchman had lost his spark, but it all came back to him on Saturday.

The goals really brought out the attributes needed by a striker; his first goal showed cleverness and skill to shoot it toward the near post (many would have gone far post) and to actually hit it where he wanted it.

His second goal showed that, like all good strikers, he knew where to be. While a player was out wide about to deliver a cross, van Persie positioned himself perfectly, and it paid off as he easily tapped the ball into the back of the net.

Those are just the positive sides; here are some bad things from the match.

As the Gunners have done consistently in the past, they showed that they can never be solid in the opening minutes of matches. Just two minutes in, Darren Pratley got a chance from just a few yards out, though it was stopped excellently by Szczesny.

Later on, David Wheater missed a header from about seven or eight yards out; a header that Arsenal must have felt they should not have given away.

The whole first half wasn't great from Arsenal, as they didn't really do that much. It was a very slow start by the Gunners.

Not only that, but the fact that Bolton had so much possession in the first half was frustrating for Gunners fans, since Arsenal are normally the team who must possess to be successful.

Also, they could only score once on Bolton, a mediocre team, throughout the 55 minutes where it was 11-on-11.

Theo Walcott's performance wasn't great, as he missed a few opportunities—including one that made many fans angry, as they thought he should have netted it. Walcott normally is either great or dismal (more often the latter), and Saturday he wasn't very good at all.

Those are the positive and negative things we got from the match. And with the next match a Champions League one against Olympiakos, some fans are scared for the future.

Because no one really knows how the unpredictable Gunners will do next.
