WWE: Why a Divas Tag Team Championship Will Never Happen

Graham GSM MatthewsJun 1, 2018

Towards the latter half of 2009, TNA Wrestling created a new championship title with a concept used sparingly years before in professional wrestling: the TNA Knockouts Tag Team Championship.

With the company's excessive amount of women wrestlers on their packed roster, it only seemed logical that the officials would bring upon such a championship that later proved to be complete worthless. A tournament was held late in the year to crown inaugural champions, which was eventually won by the crumbling team of Taylor Wilde and Sarita, who absolutely added no prestige to the straps whosoever.

Since the titles innovation two years ago, I can honestly count on both hands how many times the belts have been defended in that period. That goes to show how little Creative thinks and cares about the TNA Knockouts Tag Team Championship.

Now, getting to the point, quite a few pro wrestling viewers have speculated in the past year of WWE following suit in creating a replica championship much similar to TNA for the Divas division. Being the straightforward person that I am, I'm here to inform you that this will never happen. Ever.

Before you huge Diva fanatics out there obsessed with this concept coming to fruition begin to break out in tears, give me a moment to explain my reasoning as to why such a ridiculous concept will never make it's way over to the much larger WWE.

Firstly, there simply aren't enough Divas on the roster to conduct a tag team championship for the division. In the past few years, the amount of Divas in the company has decreased tremendously. The amount of actual women wrestlers in the company is down to only the likes of Beth Phoenix and Natalya, collectively known as the Divas of Doom.

Overall, there are approximately 15 Divas on the main roster, with only 12 being active if you don't count the pregnant Kharma, the sidelined Layla, surgically repaired Mayse and manager Vickie Guerrero. How many teams could you actually muster up to create unprecedented, interesting tag team matches over the belts?

Moreover, the prestigious Women's Championship was retired in light of the "glorified" Divas Championship last September, so I highly doubt WWE has any intentions of ever giving them more belts to work with unless the division is revamped entirely.

Although I am highly anticipating a return of the Women's Title in the midst of the feud between the Divas of Doom and the alliance of Kelly Kelly and Eve, adding tag titles into the mix would be completely unnecessary. Hell, the Knockout's Tag Team Championship shouldn't even be existent in this point in time.

Competing in matches under the course of three minutes will simply not cut it if WWE will ever want to make people care about the contests held on a weekly basis. The roster has the unlimited potential to be something much greater, but the lackluster booking that has become apparent in recent years in the division will of course not help matters in any fashion.

Until WWE begins to take the Divas division seriously (starting by taking the Divas Championship off the horrendous Kelly Kelly), I see a very grim future for the months to come until the inevitable Kharma return by WrestleMania 28. Let's hope there's even a Divas Division existing by then.

Thanks for reading, Bleachers, and make sure to drop a comment with your thoughts on the dying Divas division and the controversial concept of tag team championships in WWE. GSM out.
