Eagles vs Giants: 5 Second-Half Adjustments Philadelphia Must Make

Dan SteckenbergSep 25, 2011

As long-time NFC East foes, the Eagles and Giants know each other well. This year, the rivalry has been especially intense, with members of both teams trading barbs in the media throughout the offseason and during the run-up to this game.

The Eagles are aiming to show New York that the "dram team" is for real. So far, they're having a little bit of trouble doing that.

Here are five adjustments for the Eagles to get back on top and show New York that they're the top dog in the division.

1. Clamp Down on the Giants' Backs.

Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs are shredding the Eagles, coming at them from all angles. Both have been productive in the running AND passing game so far. Philly defenders must do a better job of recognizing the Giants' backs no matter where they show up in the formation.

2. Protect Michael Vick.

When the Giants are getting pressure, they're finishing the play by getting hits on the Philly QB. The result is one interception and a big drive-ending sack so far.

Coming off a concussion, Vick needs to be kept clean this week even more than usual.

3. Stay with the Running Game.

When the Eagles have given LeSean McCoy the ball he's shown good vision, with 5.9 yards per carry so far and a touchdown. Even with Philly behind, they need to stay with the running game to keep the Giants from teeing off on Vick, and to open up play action passes.

4. Confuse Eli.

Eli Manning is an interception machine when he gets pressured. Granted, these teams play each other often and Manning is somewhat familiar with Philly's D due to Steve Spagnuolo's tenure in New York.

The Eagles need to do a better job of confusing Eli—drawing up some blitzes he hasn't seen before during the half would be a great start.

5. Stop the Big Play.

Philly has fallen victim to two big Giants touchdown passes, and one long Ahmad Bradshaw scamper.

Frankly, it comes down to mindset.

The Eagles need to tackle better in the open field and clean up the mental errors on coverage. New York has been the tougher team today, and that's unacceptable.
