UFC 135 Results: Josh Koscheck and Jon Jones Are Legend Killers

Brian MaziqueJun 7, 2018

My sympathies go out to Comcast subscribers, as Twitter blew up with tweets like this one from MMA writer Dustin James UFC 135 Results: Josh Koscheck def. Matt Hughes via first-round TKO. So...thanks to Comcast being crappy I missed it. #UFC135 #fb.

Well, Dustin, I am truly sorry that you missed the pay-per-view. You missed two fighters putting on their best Randy Orton impersonations.

As revealed in the referenced tweet, Josh Koscheck KO'd Matt Hughes in round one of their welterweight bout. Hughes is perhaps the greatest welterweight in the history of the sport; he is certainly the most decorated.

On Saturday night, Koscheck decorated his face with blemishes and bruises as he KO'd the legend in the opening round. Hughes tried to employ his stand up fighting game and he actually did well with it, but he took too many shots. He eventually fell to the mat during a clinch and Koscheck took advantage and finished the legend with elbows and hammerfists.

After the fight, Hughes said he would not retire. I had hoped he would as I believe he will face more beatings like this if his career continues.

In the main event, Jon "Bones" Jones proved he is in the "Big 3" of UFC fighters. You have to mention him in the same breath as Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva. Not in regards to accomplishments of course, but certainly in skill-level.

The young champion has so many ways to beat you. His size, endurance, striking ability and submission game are trump tight. He nullified the tremendous striking ability of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson with his length and activity. Rampage could not get in striking range and though he was in tremendous shape, he tired and "Bones" wore him down.

The trouble began in round three when he was able to take Rampage to the mat. Rampage escaped a full mount but took a nasty elbow over the right eye that weakened him. That coupled with some nasty leg kicks to the knee really took its toll on the Light-Heavyweight legend.

In the fourth round, Jon Jones became the first fighter in UFC history to stop Rampage when he choked him out against the Octagon fence.

Both fighters were respectful in the post-fight interviews and Rampage acknowledged he was the "best Rampage ever." There is nothing like a good third-person reference after a defeat.

Shogun could be next for Rampage and Rashad Evans will be next for Jon Jones. Honestly, I can't see Rashad having any better luck than Rampage. Jones is a machine that may be in for a Chuck Liddell or Silva like run at the top of his division.

His stiffest challenge may have to come from heavyweights, if the 6'4" Jones ever decides to move up to that weight class.
