UFC 135 Results: 4 Reasons why Matt Hughes Needs to Retire
After losing in the co-main event of UFC 135 to Josh Koscheck, Matt Hughes claimed he was not ready to retire.
Although Hughes said he would rather go on the shelf for a while, it could be time for Hughes to hang it up.
Hughes is a two time welterweight champion and UFC Hall of Famer, but he is past his prime.
Here are the reason why Hughes should hang up his gloves and ride into the sunset.
He has nothing left to prove
1 of 4Among Matt Hughes accomplishments are being the two time UFC welterweight champion, most wins in the UFC, most successful welterweight title defenses, induction into the Hall of Fame and Hughes has defeated all but one of the other UFC welterweight champions.
Hughes has accomplished so much in the UFC and has been a big name in MMA since entering the sport in the late 90's.
There’s really nothing else left for Hughes to prove.
His Chin is not what it once was
2 of 4For the second straight fight Hughes has been knocked out cold.
Although he had a better outing tonight than he did against BJ Penn, the results were the same.
When a fighter loses the ability to take a punch, it’s time for them to stop before they get seriously hurt.
He isn’t getting any younger
3 of 4Next month Hughes will turn 38 years old.
Although fighters like Dan Henderson and Randy Couture performed at a high level at an older age, Hughes’ time could be up soon.
There’s no way Hughes can hang with the top fighters in the division, and younger, quicker fighters could give him problems as well.
He Can Focus on Other Ventures
4 of 4Whether Hughes chooses to be a commentator, trainer, work behind the scenes or just retire and go home to his family, he would always have something to do.
It would be hard to see a great fighter like Hughes go, but every great career must come to an end at some point.
This could be that time for Hughes.
