UFC 135 Results: Early Head-to-Toe Breakdown of Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans
With UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones' deconstruction of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson at UFC 135, the champions next defense against former friend and training partner Rashad Evans has become one of the most anticipated title fights.
Who would win in the struggle? Could Rashad Evans hope to defeat the unstoppable juggernaut that is Jones? Read and find out!
Experience: Even
1 of 7Even though Evans technically has more fights at 18 compared to Jones' 15, they are roughly equally experienced in terms of big fights since each man has been to the top of the proverbial mountain and is experienced enough to not get butterflies or the "Octagon jitters" when faced with a big crowd and a main event.
Both men have iron wills and have a calm demeanor in rough situations that only fighting experience can produce. Neither man has the advantage in this category.
Striking: Jon Jones
2 of 7While Rashad Evans has fast, strong hands, Jon Jones has fast, strong everything.
Jones' striking attack is extremely diverse, incorporating back-elbows, regular elbows, an array of kicks, and even orthodox punches.
Evans can't boast of such superlative striking and he therefore falls short in the category; Jones is the clear winner in the stand-up game.
Wrestling: Slight Edge to Jon Jones
3 of 7When Jon Jones and Rashad Evans both faced Rampage Jackson, different things happened regarding wrestling.
Jones was able to take Rampage down more times than Evans who simply used his wrestling to keep Rampage against the fence and grind out a decision.
Evans' wrestling is no-doubt good but Jones' has proven to be more diverse thanks to the abnormal length of his limbs; the slight edge in wrestling goes to Jones because of this.
Training Camp: Jon Jones
4 of 7This one is obvious. Greg Jackson's MMA training camp is considered one of the top MMA gyms in the world, if not the top one itself.
Evans has established a great camp with the "Blackzilians" at Imperial Athletics but it is not on the same caliber as Jackson's Albuquerque stronghold.
Simply put, Jones would have access to better training partners and better coaches. Thus, he will be better prepared and have a better game plan.
Chin: Jon Jones Although We STILL Haven't Seen It Truly Tested
5 of 7Rashad Evans is unfortunate enough to have a picture of him unconscious, bloody and quite frankly looking like a zombie circulating all over the Internet thanks to Lyoto Machida. Out of respect to Evans, it won't be placed in this slideshow (although any MMA fan worth their salt knows what I'm talking about).
We have also seen Evans get rocked in fights against Thiago Silva and Rampage Jackson.
Jon Jones is a fighter who has long enough reach and strong enough strikes to put Evans down and keep him there.
Nevertheless, Jones' chin has not been tested since neither Mauricio "Shogun" Rua nor Rampage Jackson could hit Jones flush on the chin with a power shot. However, even f it does turn out that Jones does have a suspect chin, it is doubtful that Evans is the one to put Jones' lights out.
This is due to the reach difference and the fact that the only people that Evans cleanly knocked out were Forrest Griffin, Chuck Liddell, Sean Salmon and Jason Lambert—two fighters with less than stellar chins and two journeymen who aren't even with the UFC.
Submissions: Jon Jones
6 of 7Both fighters prefer the (T)KO but Jones has proven that he is quite adept at submitting battered opponents. He has twice as many submissions as Evans, who hasn't truly submitted an opponent (meaning earned the victory with a submission hold rather than a submission to strikes) since his first MMA fight in 2004.
Jones has an affinity for submissions, Evans doesn't. It's as simple as that.
Winner: Jon Jones
7 of 7Jon Jones by far, the skill difference would be too much for Evans to overcome.
We have seen Jones dismantle and ground and pound solid, accomplished wrestlers and out-strike strikers, and this fight would be no different than those.
Jones would pick Evans apart until he finally got the fight to the ground and submitted Evans or finished him with elbows.
