UFC 135 Results: Ranking the top 10 welterweights in the UFC
Tonight at UFC 135, Josh Koscheck met UFC Hall of Famer and former welterweight champion, Matt Hughes in the co-main event of the evening.
While Hughes showed much improved striking, Koscheck was able to get the better of him, defeating him late in the first round by knockout.
The win makes Koscheck 16-5 (13-5 in the UFC).
Where does the win put Koscheck in the welterweight rankings? Continue reading to find out!
Number 10: Martin Kampmann
1 of 10A Number of Fighters could fill this spot.
Martin Kampmann could perhaps be the most noticeable.
Kampmann may be on a two fight losing streak, but both fights could have gone his way.
Before his fight with Jake Shields,Kampmann was on a two fight win streak and had defeated the likes of Carlos Condit and Paulo Thiago.
Kampmann is scheduled to face Rick Story at UFC 139.
Number 9: Diego Sanchez
2 of 10Currently on a two fight winning streak, Sanchez was supposed to meet Matt Hughes tonight at UFC 137.
A broken hand took Sanchez out of the fight, leaving him to be replaced by Josh Koscheck.
Jake Shields
3 of 10Despite losing to Jake Ellenberger last weekend at UFC Fight Night 25, Jake Shields has been praised for continuing to fight after losing his father/manager Jack Shields just weeks before the fight.
The lost is Shields second straight, and could have easily been his third straight after a split decision win over Martin Kampmann.
Shields has not looked great at welterweight and should possibly consider moving up to middleweight.
Josh Koscheck
4 of 10After recovering from a broken orbital bone that he suffered in his fight with GSP, Koscheck thought he was going to return to the middleweight division.
Instead Koscheck took a fight with Matt Hughes on short notice.
Koscheck defeated Hughes near the end of the first round by KO.
Jake Ellenberger
5 of 10Last weekend at UFC Fight Night 25, Ellenberger earned the biggest win of his career by defeating Jake Shields.
The win was Ellenberger’s fifth straight and should put him in position for a title run.
Ellenberger’s next fight should be anybody in the top five.
Nick Diaz
6 of 10Love him or hate him, Nick Diaz is one of the most talented welterweights in MMA.
He’s also one of the most careless.
Diaz screwed himself out of a title fight with Georges St-Pierre and will now take on B.J. Penn at UFC 137.
B.J. Penn
7 of 10After losing two straight fights to UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, Penn moved back to the welterweight division.
Penn knocked out Matt Hughes in 21 seconds at UFC 123 and earned a draw with Jon Fitch at UFC 127.
Originally scheduled to face Carlos Condit at UFC 137, Penn will now face Nick Diaz.
Carlos Condit
8 of 10After being scheduled to face BJ Penn at UFC 137, Condit was chosen to replace Nick Diaz in the title fight with Georges St-Pierre the same night.
Condit quickly accepted and will now be in the biggest fight of his career.
A dangerous fighter on the ground and in the stand up game, Condit could be St-Pierre’s biggest threat.
Jon Fitch
9 of 10Although he had a draw with BJ Penn in his last fight, Fitch is still second best in the welterweight division.
He may take the title of first in boring fights, but there is no denying where he stands in the division.
The only problem is getting him back into a title fight.
Fitch is scheduled to face Jonny Hendricks at UFC 141
Georges St-Pierre
10 of 10It’s no secret who’s number 1.
St-Pierre has been on top of the welterweight division virtually since 2007 and has looked unstoppable.
He will face Carlos Condit at UFC 137.
