UFC 135 Results: What's Next for the Main Card Winners?

First LastSep 24, 2011

UFC 135 saw the first successful defense of UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who defeated former champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson by rear-naked choke in the fourth round.

The 24-year-old dominated his opponent for three rounds and was in no trouble before securing the submission. It is arguably his greatest win to date, and it's his most important.

In the co-main event, Josh Koscheck stopped former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes. Koscheck was able to knock Hughes out at 4:59 of the first round. It was his first fight back since losing to Georges St-Pierre last year.

Other main card winners include Nate Diaz, Mark Hunt and Travis Browne.

This is who they should fight next.

Nate Diaz Defeats Takanori Gomi by Submission in Round 1

1 of 5

After a four fight run in the welterweight division, Nate Diaz moved back down to lightweight for his fight with Takanori Gomi, which opened up the pay-per-view for UFC 135.

The younger brother of Nick Diaz submitted the Japanese superstar in the first round after a boxing exhibition where he looked better than ever. To add to the impressive victory, he did it against one of the hardest punchers in the division and looked flawless in doing so.

For Diaz, a fight with Evan Dunham (12-2) is a suitable opponent and one that could provide many fireworks. Dunham was recently seen defeating Shamar Bailey at the last UFC Fight Night.

Travis Browne Defeats Rob Broughton by Unanimous Decision

2 of 5

Travis Browne extended his undefeated record to 12-0-1 with a victory over England's Rob Broughton. The 6'7" heavyweight won a clear unanimous decision but did not look impressive in doing so.

In the UFC's heavyweight division, it's not hard to get into the top 10, and this is where Browne currently sits.

He isn't ready for a top five guy, but he can take on another winner from tonight's card in Mark "The Super Samoan" Hunt, who beat Ben Rothwell. Hunt is 7-7 in MMA, but has experience fighting some of the best fighters in the world, including Fedor Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem and Mirko Cro Crop.

Mark Hunt Defeats Ben Rothwell by Unanimous Decision

3 of 5

Mark Hunt got a much-needed victory over Ben Rothwell to solidify his place in the UFC for now. He evened his record at 7-7 with the unanimous decision victory, and it's his second win in the UFC.

As stated in the previous slide, Hunt should face a mid-tier heavyweight, and there aren't too many he can choose from in the UFC without jumping into the best of the best.

Hunt can take on Travis Browne and put on the stand-up war that many have come to know him for over the years. Browne would certainly want to test himself against Hunt.

Josh Koscheck Defeats Matt Hughes by KO in Round 1

4 of 5

Josh Koscheck got a big win over Matt Hughes in the co-main event, and it came after almost a year-long layoff out of the cage.

The 33-year-old hasn't fought since 2010 and accepted the fight with Hughes on short notice after Diego Sanchez dropped out of the fight due to an injury.

Hughes looked good early, but Koscheck was able to catch him late and put him unconscious with one second left in the first round.

If Koscheck doesn't want to fight at welterweight after an unsuccessful title fight, he can move up to middleweight and work his way towards Anderson Silva, who he may surprisingly fair well against considering his wrestling credentials.

Maybe light heavyweight Stephan Bonnar can meet him at middleweight or a catchweight, and they can settle their differences there. The two haven't had the nicest words to say about each other lately, and both have showed interest in the fight.

If he stays at welterweight, a fight with Jake Ellenberger could be intriguing and one to look forward to.

Jon Jones Defeats Quinton Jackson by Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) in Round 4

5 of 5

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will have big fights ahead of him after his performance against Quinton Jackson, who he submitted in the fourth round to retain his belt.

After the fight, he was met inside the cage by former teammate Rashad Evans. The two were supposed to fight at an earlier date, but Jones had to pull out due to an injured hand. Now, they will be set to fight and put their skills to the test.

It will go down as one of the most anticipated fights of the year, but it's a fight with Anderson Silva that will really be intriguing for the 24-year-old. This fight needs to happen sooner than later, but Jones has to get through Evans first.
