Let's See If Charlie Weis Can Save His Job
I cannot even begin to count the number of articles written about Charlie Weis and the current status of the team. The articles all agree on one fact: Notre Dame is not playing acceptable football.
Some areas have shown some consistency. Some areas even have caused some premature excitement. But there has not been one single entire game where the Irish had dominated. There has not been one single game where the team played for 60 minutes. There has not been one single game where Notre Dame finished strong.
Even in the Washington game—by far the easiest victory—Jimmy Clausen had passing issues, and the final drive by Washington prevented a shutout. While the touchdown itself is of little consequence, it shows a lack of discipline, which is disheartening.
Perhaps discipline is not the correct word. I am looking at a whole set of horrible facts. The offensive line's struggles are not worth mentioning. They are too numerous, and the attitude of those players is too disgusting. I do not even know how they stand to look themselves in the mirror.
Running backs: It is difficult to list their progress as the recent line play has simply been too horrible.
Quarterback: He does not get enough protection, but he has missed several wide-open receivers.
Receivers: Can any one of these guys break away from coverage consistently?
Defensive line: Sometimes they generate pressure (rarely), but most of the time they are pushed around too much. I would suggest Pat Kuntz actually focus his anger on opposing linemen instead of his disgusted fans. Seriously, do you think that the criticism is unjustified?
Defensive backs: OK, Mr. Crum, let's see if you can back up your bravado. Too many times in the past you guys have failed. You guys made some decent aggressive plays. You guys have also made several foolish errors.
What I miss most about the past glory days is the determination to win. The recent teams seem to think that it is their right to be on this team. They need to be reminded that it is an honor and privilege.
