Liverpool vs Wolves: Picking the Reds Starting XI
Liverpool got a win against Brighton in the Carling Cup, which should help settle their nerves after two straight utterly frustrating losses to Stoke City and Tottenham Hotspur.
They return to their home ground of Anfield Road to take on another scrappy opponent in Mic McCarthy's Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Just as Liverpool are receiving a morale boost by the return of their Captain Steven Gerrard, Wolves can take great joy in the return of Matt Jarvis. The weeks without Jarvis have proven poor for Wolves as he is their best creator.
Gerrard will hope to reclaim his right to the Reds midfield, and it should be a great matchup on Saturday September 24, 2011.
GK: Pepe Reina
1 of 12The ever-true shot stopper is an automatic inclusion, nothing to discuss.
RB: Martin Kelly
2 of 12Martin Kelly returned Wednesday night against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Carling Cup after missing several weeks due to injury. His fitness looks fine and he should be up for it.
RCB: Jamie Carragher
3 of 12Jamie Carragher continues to be a rock at the back for the Reds and his experience is irreplaceable at the back.
LCB: Martin Skrtel
4 of 12Martin Skrtel should return to the lineup in place of the injured Daniel Agger. The middle of the week Carling Cup match allowed him to serve his suspension before the league action was back on.
LB: Jose Enrique
5 of 12Jose Enrique earned a well-deserved rest during the week with Jack Robinson deputizing for him against Brighton.
Enrique should return to his spot on the weekend.
CDM: Lucas Leiva
6 of 12Lucas continues to be the bedrock of the midfield as his holding position has him entrenched in the starting 11 for the time being. If Kenny needs more attack I could see him subbed off for Charlie Adam in the second half.
RM: Dirk Kuyt
7 of 12Dirk Kuyt scored one of two goals in the Carling Cup match midweek and it proved to be the decisive goal at the end. Kuyt should come in on a high, taking the place of Jordan Henderson.
CM: Steven Gerrard
8 of 12The Captain returns to take up his mantle in the middle. Charlie Adam may have to wait another game or two before he can start really building a partnership with Gerrard, who looked good in his short cameo against Brighton.
LW: Stewart Downing
9 of 12Stewart Downing got a rest on Wednesday and he will be needed at full tilt against an unpredictable Wolves team that has teeth at times.
Downing will have to work diligently to continue to supply the service to the middle he has so far this season.
RS: Craig Bellamy
10 of 12Craig Bellamy deserves a start after his great showing midweek. His goal was well taken, but it was his free kick that somehow was kept out by the crossbar that was masterclass. Bellamy should add a great new element to the first team on the pitch at full strength.
LS: Luis Suarez
11 of 12Luis Suarez is an automatic to start, but he needs to calm himself down and find his finishing. He appears so frustrated on the pitch, and he keeps missing goals that when he is confident he puts away with ease. He needs a goal early to settle him back into his usual self.
Conclusion
12 of 12Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish enjoyed a great result this week after having two frustrating losses in a row.
The returns of both Steven Gerrard and Martin Kelly to the lineup should help ease his injury sufferings, and it will be interesting to see what the Captain does in Kenny's new system
