7 WWE Mid-Carders Ready for the Main Event

Nathan GieseSep 22, 2011

As it stands today, Raw and Smackdown each have four main event stars who have fought, or will soon fight, for the their respective brands world title on a regular basis this year.

Raw has John Cena, CM Punk, Alberto Del Rio and The Miz.

Smackdown has Randy Orton, Christian, Mark Henry and Sheamus.

The Miz has been reduced to a role in the "Conspiracy Theory" that surrounds him and tag partner R-Truth as of late, while Sheamus has yet to have his shot at the title over on the Blue Brand.

Four stars a piece, eight total for two titles. Simple math states that that seems pretty respectable.

In reality, that is nowhere near the numbers should be. People keep complaining about how John Cena and Randy Orton always seem to find their way back to the title one way or another and the company brass likes to thrown in random opponents for them however they please.

What it all boils down to is a lack of faith in the remaining members of the roster to be able to hold their own in a title feud. Fans have been screaming for a change of scenery and have yet to receive it.

Heck, even Punk has been asking for change, and I don't think he has been talking just about himself being put into the bigger picture.

The youth movement appears to have been a bust to the naked eye, but in fact, it is just reaching its tipping point. With all that is going on surrounding both world titles spells opportunity, spells chances and signifies an opening for younger, fresher talent to take the helms and run with it.

Here are seven current mid-carders who are primed and ready for the big time.

Jack Swagger

1 of 8

Had this been this time last year, I would have almost had Swagger written of as a future member of the Future Endeavored club.

He had one run with the World Heavyweight Championship last year, and that turned out to be a total bust. From there, he went to barely being featured on television, and many fans kind of forgot about him. He became almost a mainstay on Superstars and only appeared on Raw or Smackdown to job to one of the main event players of the time.

From there, he got a mini push by becoming Michael Cole's personal trainer and bodyguard during his feud with Jerry Lawler. There were numerous opportunities for Swagger to turn face by attacking Cole after he had disrespected him on a number of occasions, but nothing came to a head.

Now, Jack is in a fully on warfare with Dolph Ziggler over the services of Vickie Guerrero, and things seem to be heating up with Dolph not taking too kindly to the fact Vickie is branching out her expertise to non-champions.

With this story just starting to get somewhere, it's a little early to call. But it appears that Swagger could be having a run with the US Championship in the near future, making him the All-American American United States Champion, which just works too perfectly.

From there, Jack can start to set his sights on bigger, badder opponents. Maybe even challenging Punk, stating that he is the one making change happen while Punk is just talking about it.

Jack has the talents to be in the main event. Just whenever he does get back there, it needs to be handled properly unlike his first crack at the big time.

John Morrison

2 of 8

Although some would have JoMo even higher on this list, right now, he sits at nine for me, as he seems to have absolutely no direction whatsoever.

Morrison has put on some amazing performances in the ring due to his high-flying style of wrestling. Acrobatics, combined with Parkour training, has enabled Morrison to pull off some moves many of us can only perform in video games.

Morrison has had some title opportunities in the past, but only as an extra in Elimination Chamber, Ladder and Cage matches to put on stunts like I mentioned before.

Although never officially placed into a title picture that didn't have ECW attached to the beginning of it, he did have a very stellar Falls Count Anywhere match in January against Miz for the WWE title that had many fans wondering when he would get his time to shine.

Morrison does lack legitimate mic ability, except there was a report that while recovering from surgery a few months ago that he was talking comedy classes to try to better his chances at getting more title shots.

Jomo can bring excitement and energy to the WWE title scene, much like Jeff Hardy did while he was still with the company. Fans love him, and he has the ripped looked that Vince McMahon loves in a champion. Morrison is more than ready for his time to shine and has paid his dues to the company many times to earn it.

Kofi Kingston

3 of 8

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button can't hold a candle to The Curious Case of Kofi Kingston.

Here is a guy who was on his way to the big dance in a matter of around a year-and-a-half in the business. He won Tag Team championships, Intercontinental championships and United States championships with great success.

Then came his feud with Randy Orton, and everything he had going for him seemed to go away in a flash. There is a lot of speculation as to why this happened, with most people blaming Orton for complaining to brass about Kingston not being ready after he screwed up once in the ring.

Now, Kingston is part of AirBoom with Evan Bourne, who currently hold the tag team championships. That may hold Kingston back from the main event scene for a little while longer, but don't worry, he's ready. It's only a matter of time as to when he'll get that opportunity.

Kingston's high-flying ability, much like that of Morrison's, keeps fans' attention as they await his next big move. Because he has the fans' attention so often, that leaves the door open for him to really show us what's he's got.

Eventually, AirBoom will crumble as most randomly paired tag teams do, so once that happens, either after Evan or Kofi turn heel on the other one, Kofi will be in perfect position for his shot at the major championships in the WWE.

Daniel Bryan

4 of 8

Here's a guy whose direction seems to be lost in the shuffle these days on Smackdown.

After winning the Smackdown Money in the Bank contract, Bryan went on to feud with Wade Barrett, a feud which he lost cleanly at SummerSlam.

Now, he was the man that Sin Cara turned heel against after a loss to the Mexican high-flyer. And now a feud that could have featured two young up-and-comers now has been lost due to the return of the other Sin Cara.

Bryan has been reduced to Superstars several times over the past month and now doesn't seem to have anything going for him.

This is very sad considering that his stock skyrocketed after his MITB win and announcing that he would cash in his contract at this year's WrestleMania. Bryan is the best technical wrestler in the business today, and his talents are being lost and wasted on Internet television. Even his attempt at a regular YouTube program ended up in failure.

Bryan should eventually be elevated to the main event scene, and with good reason. Nobody who has announced in advance his plans to cash in the contract has ever been this poorly mishandled, and it couldn't have happened to a harder worker.

Bryan has stepped up his game in the ring, put on some amazing matches and is developing an aggression with his wrestling style that hasn't been seen since the likes of Dean Malenko in his heyday.

Daniel Bryan is a future champion, or at least he should be. If his contract cash-in is going to amount to anything, the time is now to start getting him more experience in the main event scene.

Wade Barrett

5 of 8

Wade Barrett is another case of poor booking.

His run as the Nexus leader was far from disappointing, at least until the end of it. He helped lead one of the most dangerous and terrifying groups in WWE history. He was in the title picture for most of his stay on Raw and allowed to do a story with John Cena, something not most new superstars are able to do.

Since his move to Smackdown, Barrett has failed at a recreation attempt of Nexus in the form of the Corre, had a less than remarkable run with the Intercontinental strap and has since been lost in the shuffle on an overloaded mid-card scene.

Barrett possesses great in-ring savvy, amazing mic skills and carries himself with a swagger that hasn't been found in new talent for some time now.

Barrett has the right look and the right ability to be a front man in the main event scene if given the proper work and story. If given the opportunity, Wade could be a mainstay for years to come.

Cody Rhodes

6 of 8

Not so dashing any more, Cody Rhodes has started to become a legitimate candidate for the next big superstar over on Smackdown.

His new "disgusting" gimmick has been working wonders for him lately; even the paper bags he gives out to the crowd have become a hot commodity.

Right now, Rhodes is on fire. He has defeated Randy Orton, retained his Intercontinental championship against his former mentee Ted DiBiase and now looks to set his sights even higher.

After overcoming the criticism and favoritism for his former tag partner DiBiase, Rhodes has proved everybody wrong by becoming more successful than his counterparts.

He's a former multi-time tag team champion and now holds the IC title while also trying to bring prestige back to what use to be one of the most well-respected championships in the company.

Rhodes has improved his in-ring ability dramatically and can now carry a match if needed to. Rhodes has a character that can easily work well for him even more if he is holding a position in the big time with the likes of Randy Orton, Mark Henry, Christian and Sheamus.

Now is the time for some fresh blood on Smackdown, and Rhodes can be the one to lead the way.

Dolph Ziggler

7 of 8

The current United States Champion and destined to be a world champion in the near future, Dolph Ziggler is the total package.

He has great wrestling ability, two devastating finishing moves that can be used at any point in time and his mic abilities have been getting some fine tuning as of late during his current feud with Jack Swagger over Vickie Guerrero.

Ziggler did have a successful mini run in the main event scene in his final days on Smackdown, even holding the World Heavyweight title for about 20 minutes.

Ziggler has the right look, the right confidence and the right attitude to make his way to a championship of the highest level. Only thing he needs to do to get himself to that point is drop Vickie.

Vickie has been carrying Dolph for far too long, especially when it comes to cutting promos. She has been his crutch since they started dating, and now that they are business partners, she appears to be moving on. It's in Dolph's best interest to do the same.

A man with Dolph's talents will always find a way to the main event scene eventually; it's just a matter of time. Well, that time is now.

Raw is in need of more stars now more than ever now that The Miz and R-Truth have been fired. Dolph can fill that void of having more competitors for the WWE title. He's the total package and now is as perfect of time as any to allow him to prove it.

Conclusion

8 of 8

The main event scene in the WWE has become greatly thin over the years and is in desperate need for fresh, young faces to help usher in a new era.

Cena, Punk, Orton, Christian and Henry can only carry the hierarchy for so long, with only Del Rio and Sheamus there to attempt to pick up where they leave off.

Main events should never be as repetitive as they have been lately, so getting new blood intermingled in there should be the company's No. 1 priority.

To leave off, I'd like to leave you all with the image of one of the most underrated beauties in the WWE, Eve Torres. Take one look into those big, sensual.......eyes, and tell me she is not sexy.

What do you guys think?

Are these guys ready for the big time?
