WWE Friday Night Smackdown Preview: Storylines to Look Out for
The WWE is quickly building towards it's Hell in a Cell PPV, which is literally a little over a week away.
Expect Hell in a Cell to have a lot of rematches from Night of Champions. There are already two matches scheduled on the card.
- Mark Henry vs. Randy Orton (Hell in a Cell World Championship)
- John Cena vs. CM Punk vs. Albert Del Rio (Hell in a Cell WWE Championship)
Smackdown has a good amount of storylines on Friday Nights to continue building up. With Raw being the main focus due to their "conspiracy" storyline, Smackdown has been a bit overshadowed since the summer started.
This is Smackdown's opportunity to gain attention from the fanbase. With Henry recently winning the World Championship for the first time at Night of Champions, Smackdown has a brand new look to their brand.
Will Randy Orton be able to regain what was rightfully his before Night of Champions? What will Orton do on this Friday night's Smackdown to make a statement in inching towards his goal?
This is just one of several storylines to look out for this Friday night on Smackdown.
Sheamus vs. Christian
1 of 4This "feud" started picking up steam awhile back when both men were contending to be the No. 1 contender for Orton's World Heavyweight Championship.
As of the current moment, the storyline was re-ignited this past Sunday at Night of Champions.
Neither man had a match at Night of Champions. Christian came out in the middle of the show to deliver his "one more match" speech. Of course, that brought out Sheamus. Sheamus agreed to help Christian get one more match, but only under the condition that Christian give Sheamus a title shot if he wins the title.
Sheamus then started a "one more chant" match of his own, before he leveled Christian with a brogue kick.
This continued the following night on Monday Night Raw.
Sheamus and Christian were involved in an eight-man tag match. At the end of the match, Sheamus was set to give Christian the Celtic Cross, before Christian backed out. Instead, David Otunga ate the Cross and the pin to further the character development of Christian as a "coward."
It should be interesting to see how this feud further develops on Smackdown.
It would not surprise me in the least to see these two battle it out at Hell in a Cell for a title shot at the World Heavyweight Championship.
The Sin Cara Situation
2 of 4This feud will most likely lead to a match between the "evil Sin Cara" and the "real Sin Cara" at Hell in a Cell.
This entire situation started when the "real Sin Cara" was suspended and "evil Sin Cara" took his place, continuing to pose as "Mistico," or the real Sin Cara.
These two finally confronted one another on the previous week's Smackdown when Mistico made his return. "Evil Sin Cara" was in the midst of beating down Daniel Bryan until Mistico came into the ring to confront the "fake Sin Cara."
The situation escalated when both of these men battled it out on Monday Night Raw in a sequence of high-flying maneuvers.
Expect more light to be shed on the Cara feud on Friday night.
Great Khali/Jinder Mahal
3 of 4This is a storyline that has never really gained any steam.
It's been featured prominently on Smackdown over the past several months, but for a variety of reasons, the audience doesn't seem to care.
I think this storyline never took off for the following reasons:
- Nobody cares for Jinder Mahal. Yes, he's good on the mic. Yes, he's not bad in any distinguishable way. I think people have seen Mahal's character in numerous superstars, and they've seen those superstars do it better than Mahal has.
- Khali has been a comedy character for the better part of the past three years. He hasn't been a threat since 2007, when he held the World Title. It's hard for people to buy Khali as a serious character after watching him on the "Kiss Cam" for the past several years.
The way that they explained the background of this feud is that Mahal is married to Khali's sister. Mahal has an empire in India, while Khali's family grew up not so privileged. If Khali didn't do as Mahal ordered, then Mahal would send Khali's sister back into poverty.
Mahal attacked Khali on Smackdown last week in the middle of Khali's match, leading Khali to destroy Mahal.
Expect this storyline to conclude Friday night on Smackdown.
Mark Henry vs. Christian
4 of 4With Mark Henry winning his first World Heavyweight Championship after 15 years in the business, there's no doubt that he'll have something to say yet again on Friday Night Smackdown.
On Monday night, he made JR and Jerry Lawler eat crow by attacking both men. He concluded this attack by putting Lawler through a table.
If there's been a bright spot on Smackdown recently, it's the character development of Mark Henry.
Before Henry made the jump from Raw to Smackdown a few months ago, Henry hadn't been relevant for years. Arguably, he was last relevant when he was contending for the ECW Title in 2008.
Henry made it known that this is likely his last year in the WWE. If it is, it's a hell of a way to go out.
Randy Orton's rematch clause was made official on Raw. Orton will be facing Henry for the title at Hell in a Cell.
What will Orton have to say after his loss to Henry? Does the Viper have an RKO in store for Henry?
Friday night Smackdown should answer those very questions.
