WWE: 10 Reasons Why John Cena Will Not Succeed as WWE Champion
John Cena is the biggest draw in wrestling. He is the biggest seller of merchandise. He also gets the biggest reactions, positive or negative.
No matter how anybody feels about him, all of this holds true.
With that said, he shouldn't hold the title. He is one of the worst choices to hold onto the title.
Here's why.
His Character Is Stale
1 of 11A couple of years ago, Cena had an edgy attitude that gained him a multitude of fans. Then he transitioned into a champion for the kids. The problem is that you can't really have an edge when your key demographic is six-year-olds.
Even if he did go back to the angry rapper he was a couple of years ago, it wouldn't work. A character must always evolve so it can stay fresh and so the performer can keep growing. Returning to the past would just lead to stagnation and boredom.
But Cena can't change. It's not possible for him to evolve his character anymore.
Much like Hulk Hogan, he can turn his character into either a villain or a hero, but he can't change it. Even if he did try to play any other character than the one he already has, the fans wouldn't accept it.
Having a character like that be champion is a problem.
It Doesn't Help Others Get over
2 of 11The title might not mean what it did years ago, but that doesn't mean it's lost all value. It can still help establish guys who might otherwise not have been able to make it.
Whereas I think this should be done with lesser titles—that is a topic for another time—it is the WWE title that is now used to enhance wrestlers.
Everyday that Cena holds onto the title is a missed opportunity to create a new star. Cena is holding onto something that could give another guy clout.
It helped the Miz when he had the title. It could have helped Alberto Del Rio if he had been given anything close to a real title rein. However, they chose to hand the belt back to Cena and now it is back to the status quo. That just means that the WWE helped prove that not only was Del Rio not a threat to Cena, but that he was just holding the belt until Cena could get him in a match.
That is not the way to build an effective villain.
Then again, it's not a great way to build any character.
Cena Doesn't Need the Belt
3 of 11Cena doesn't need the belt. He has reached the level that few do in that he could never win another championship and it wouldn't make him any less established.
He has reached the same echelon as Shawn Michaels or The Undertaker. He has become bigger than the belt. His fans will watch him no matter what, even if his career lasts another 10 years.
This leads to the next point which is...
Kids Will Always Cheer for Him
4 of 11Children will flock to John Cena even if he doesn't hold the championship. He just needs to face a bully and beat them up, saving the day, and they will be happy.
As long as he is the good guy and somehow close to the main event, they'll be happy. He doesn't need to keep winning his fans over. They already buy his merchandise and chant his name.
He's over. It's done. He doesn't need to keep trying.
The best example is the Rock. He doesn't come back for months at a time and yet his fans love him. Why? Because the hard part is over. He already won them over.
Cena has done the same. He's reached the top. Now he can ease up a little.
It Might Make His Character Interesting Again
5 of 11It seems like Cena's character is always trying to become the champ or keep the belt. If he starts feuding with people for reasons other than getting another crack at the gold, it might make for an interesting story.
He'll still be the same character, but the story will be different.
He isn't going to be able to become a different character, but that doesn't mean the scenery around him can't change.
If he stopped trying to go for the title, he might suddenly get a new desire. Since he already has the angle of being a superhero, it might be possible to make him suddenly not care about the title anymore and just try to stop the heels whenever they try to harm other wrestlers. Then a powerful heel could rise up and try to stop him from doing that.
It's cheesy and lame, but his character could be considered the same.
It Means That Others Don't Get to Be in the Main Event
6 of 11Putting the title on another guy means that he gets a main-event shot in a pay-per-view. That means serious money and a spotlight that gives another wrestler a chance to shine.
Any character is built on the culmination of moments that they have and usually they involve pay-per-view matches. That is because the matches are usually longer and are major focal points in storylines.
Something other wrestlers could use.
It's also a chance to build new main-event draws. Some guys might shine on the big stage while others fail, but in the end, it will mean that new star players would appear and other guys would get a bigger paycheck.
It would also give the WWE some new main-event talent.
His Matches Are Predictable
7 of 11Yes, Cena uses the same moves.
Yes, it gets predictable.
However, it gets repetitive for more reasons than people think.
Cena faces the same opponents and that means having the same kind of matches. He has also been in the main scene for so long that people are used to said moves.
Very few guys can pull off the same moves and keep it fresh. Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker are a few examples of the exception to the rule. For everybody else, they need to vary their opponents and how they end the match. This includes Cena.
However, he doesn't or he can't depending on if it's his choice or Vince's. Either way, it's boring and tying it to a championship match makes that match boring.
If Cena Loses the Belt, It Might Help RAW's Ratings
8 of 11This doesn't mean that Cena doesn't start losing or becoming a heel.
It doesn't mean that he will stop being a ratings draw.
He can keep drawing the ratings that he has been even without the belt. Kids will tune in to see him either way. Putting the belt on someone else might give even help the ratings go up a bit more.
After all, kids will always love Cena as long as he stands up for the same ideals he's always had.
Adults are the ones who care about titles.
If Cena Loses the Belt, It Might Help PPV Buys
9 of 11Pay-per-views are bought by families, but it's probably bought more by the 18-34 white male demographic.
It isn't a proven fact, and I could be wrong, but I have a feeling that putting the title on different characters might help the buy rates of PPVs. Kids buy merchandise or get their parents to buy merchandise, but it's usually the adult fans who buy PPVs.
Cena can still be in an important match at the top or in the co-main event. It just doesn't need to be for the title.
In this way, I believe it will help different fans see multiple reasons for buying a PPV.
It's Not His Era
10 of 11Hogan, Savage and Warrior were the poster boys of the 80s.
Austin, The Rock and DX were the voice of the 90s.
Cena was part of the image of the early 2000s.
Now Punk is the man who speaks for this generation.
Whenever there is a changing of the guard, there should also be a changing of the title. The man who represents the era should also hold the title.
It's as simple as that.
