Rams vs Giants Monday Night Football: Will Steven Jackson Play?

Chris TrapassoSep 19, 2011

The Rams and Giants Monday Night matchup is the battle of the injured teams, but the status of one impact player is still up in the air.

St. Louis running back Steven Jackson injured his quadriceps in the Week 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and did not practice all week.

However, Albert Breer of the NFL Network sent out a tweet this morning regarding the Rams tailback:

"Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo told me the club will put Steven Jackson through a workout pregame to determine his availability for tonight"

This comes as somewhat of a surprise, as it was initially believed that Jackson would at least be sidelined for a week to nurse the injury.

With Danny Amendola listed as doubtful, the Rams could be without two of their most productive skill position offensive players.

Head coach Steve Spagnuolo told Breer the following:

"We knew the only shot he had was to rest it all the way through. It’ll be a tough call."

It'll be worth monitoring Jackson during the pregame drills. I think if there are any hiccups before the game, the Rams coaching staff with keep their franchise running back out of this one.

However, Jackson is as tough as they come and could be used sparingly throughout the course of the game.

Either way, Cadillac Williams should receive the lion's share of the carries and St. Louis should be looking to attack a weakened Giants secondary if Jackson is out.

The fact that Spaguolo isn't ruling out Jackson is interesting and leads me to believe that Jackson may play this evening.

The NFC West is wide open, but the Rams have high expectations for this season and should do whatever they can to avoid an 0-2 start.
