Floyd Mayweather Shows Victor Ortiz and the World How He Can Be Beaten

First LastJun 7, 2018

Following the controversial knockout Floyd Mayweather (42-0, 26 KO) had over his opponent, Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KO), on Saturday night, the boxing world has been talking about which side they take and whether the KO was illegal.

Seemingly frustrated, it appears many are looking for a way to discredit an undefeated fighter for taking advantage of an opportunity when Ortiz's hands were low and any fist-to-face contact was legal. One left hook and one right hand later, and Ortiz was down and counted out with Mayweather getting his 42nd victory in a row.

But why is everyone so frustrated?

Maybe it's because nobody has been able to figure out the problem that Mayweather places in front of them, and every time he steps into the ring, fans are led to believe this will be the guy who will challenge him.

So, what's the solution?

The answer is simple—attack him when he's not himself. Instead of putting his arms out to hug Mayweather for a second time and waiting for the ref to wave them back in, he could have gotten the one shot he might have needed to put Mayweather down and out. Ortiz had the opportunity to do so, but he let himself be the victim without punching an unprotected Mayweather.

Two dirty moves don't make a right, but the second one would have been as legal as Mayweather's was, and it may have gotten him the biggest victory of his career.

Ortiz had just as much of an opportunity to attack Mayweather when he got hit with those two shots, so why didn't he?

Maybe because shortly before the knockout occurred, Ortiz had intentionally head-butted his opponent and was looking for a way to apologize without knowing exactly how to do so.

Obviously, Ortiz didn't set up the in-the-ring interaction after the foul, but what if a Mayweather opponent did and made him pay for it?

Maybe Mayweather, a fighter who really never lets his defense down, will give his opponent that split-second they need to get a KO blow off if they can make him think they are going to put their own defense down to embrace him.

It might be a little dirty, but boxing is sometimes a dirty world, and it's definitely one Mayweather has taken advantage of. It's time for his opponents to start doing it as well.

Mayweather doesn't need to take the type of advantages he did against a far less experienced opponent, but that might be the key to breaking his unbreakable defense.

That's the only way to beat him at this point, and it's going to take someone who realizes it to do so.

Remember, attack him when he's not himself.
