WWE Night of Champions 2011 Results: 7 New Rivalries We Could See Going Forward
WWE Night of Champions 2011 has come and gone. While some fans will choose to dwell on the results of the pay-per-view tonight, I choose to look forward. Let us take a look at what possible new rivalries could happen in the future.
We can expect that, although some current feuds have not ended, there are many new feuds that will be created due to the results of the PPV.
Here are seven that I could see going forward based on what we saw in Night of Champions. Let me know what future feuds you think will form in the comments section.
Sheamus vs. Christian
1 of 7I did not need Sheamus to interrupt Christian to see this feud was on the horizon. The World Championship will require a legitimate number one contender waiting in the background. The only two that come to mind are Sheamus and Christian.
The WWE is taking advantage of the fact that Christian still has some heat. Right now Sheamus is rising as a top face in the organization. The best way to keep his momentum going is to make sure he stays relevant.
Sheamus will be the World Champion eventually, there is no about this. Right now he has to wait his turn. Randy Orton and Mark Henry are not done their feud, so Sheamus has to stay busy.
This also helps Christian stay in the picture as well. I think most people feel like Christian lost a lot of steam after losing to Orton again. Maybe this feud will keep Christian in the World title hunt too, though I’m not banking on it.
Look for Sheamus to use Christian as a way to keep rising. Christian on the other hand, will probably fall into irrelevancy when the feud is complete.
Dolph Ziggler vs. Jack Swagger
2 of 7Everyone thought Jack Swagger was going to take Dolph Ziggler’s title tonight. Most people thought tonight would be the night that Ziggler gets screwed.
That was not the case.
The WWE is being smart. Instead of having Swagger win, they had Ziggler get the best of him. They created more heat between them this way. If Swagger would have won outright it would have been a odd direction to the take the United States championship right now.
Jack Swagger has no identity. Is he a heel? Is he a face?
Swagger needs to establish himself on one side or the other before he can become champion. The WWE made the right move by having Ziggler keep the title. Jack Swagger could take him on in a singles match at a later date.
This win actually validated Dolph Ziggler. Many fans get on him because he does not seem to defend the title much. Well, he was crafty enough to hold on tonight. I hope Jack Swagger takes advantage of this and go face. Either way, this is not over between them.
Cody Rhodes vs. Daniel Bryan
3 of 7Cody Rhodes defeated Ted Dibiase by rolling him up and pulling some tights; a cliché win for any heel.
Effective nonetheless.
The WWE Creative team has two options: Continue to build a rivalry between Ted Dibiase and Cody Rhodes, or move on to another contender.
I think they will likely move on and let someone else take a shot at the Intercontinental title. Ted Dibiase was thrown into this match so the Intercontinental championship could be defended at “Night of Champions.” Dibiase, although a decent competitor, really was just there because he has chemistry with Rhodes.
So I turn to Daniel Bryan.
According to Bryan, he won’t be cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase until Wrestlemania. With Bryan floundering recently, why not at least get him involved into the Intercontinental title picture?
Bryan and Rhodes are very talented wrestlers in the ring. Cody Rhodes seems to be turning into a legitimate heel, so this could be a good way for the WWE to build up Bryan.
Air Boom vs. the Usos
4 of 7Air Boom defended the titles against Awesome Truth. The WWE ended the match perfectly as the conspiracy angle can play out further with Awesome Truth.
Where does that leave the current tag team champions though?
The Miz and R-Truth could not win tonight because it would mean that the WWE was not conspiring against them. That angle is too entertaining to end right now. This is the reason why they will not continue to go after the titles. At least for now.
Still, Kofi Kingston and Evan Borne need opponents.
The WWE seems to be riding Air Boom right now. If the WWE wants to continue to validate them as a legitimate tag team, why not have them feud with a serviceable team in the Usos?
The WWE will need to have a few genuine tag teams in the mix if they want to continue to revitalize the tag team division. Air Boom does not need a heated feud with the Usos, just a competitive one.
Kelly Kelly vs. Maryse
5 of 7Kelly Kelly beat Beth Phoenix and defended her Diva’s Championship successfully. Unless the WWE wants Beth Phoenix to lose at a third straight PPV, they will need to determine who Kelly Kelly’s next victim is. I mean, opponent.
The obvious choice seems to be Eve. I feel like most fans of the Diva’s division believe Eve will take a heel turn and feud with her buddy, Kelly Kelly.
I do not deny that the potential for that feud is certainly there. However, it’s almost too obvious. If the WWE wants to try to revive this division, they need to give Kelly Kelly a legitimate feuding partner.
How about Maryse?
The lovely Maryse has been out of action due to injury. She has personality, decent wrestling skills and a killer body. If the WWE insists on having the title around a model’s waste, then maybe the current champ needs a model heel to clash with.
Also, do not forget that Maryse is the most successful Diva’s champion of all time. No one has held the title longer than her. She is a legit champion that has both good looks and great heat.
Beth Phoenix may have been in the picture so Maryse could recuperate. I look forward to her return.
Big Show and Kane vs. Mark Henry
6 of 7You may still be asking yourself "Did that just happen?" Mark Henry just destroyed Randy Orton at Night of Champions. If you weren’t convinced about Mark Henry being a major threat, you should be now.
Randy Orton was beaten soundly by Henry. Will the WWE really allow Orton to look that weak? I think they have too.
Honestly, would the WWE be foolish enough to put Orton into ANOTHER feud with multiple title changes? I don’t think so.
Enter Kane and the Big Show.
With Orton cooling off, the Big Show and Kane could provide to be great enemies for Henry. They will want revenge and Henry may need competitors more at his speed for future main events.
Face it, Henry cannot be dominant against weak opponents. If the WWE wants him to continue to look scary, he may need to beat on some of the big boys again.
CM Punk vs. Triple H vs. Everyone Else
7 of 7Triple H did what he set out to do: get revenge. The Game defeated CM Punk and will get to keep his job as the COO going forward. That does not mean this feud is over.
Quite the opposite in fact. Chaos reigned supreme as the Miz, R-Truth and Kevin Nash all interfered at various points in the match.
The WWE Creative team seemed to be trying to convince us that Nash and Awesome Truth wanted Triple H to lose the match. However, Nash ended up giving CM Punk a Jackknife Powerbomb and R-Truth questionably saved Triple H from being pinned.
This interference means that the feud between Triple H and CM Punk has now been compounded once again.
I wonder if Triple H’s victory will be enough to satisfy him. This match was made because Triple H took CM Punk’s comments about his wife personally. Triple H vindicated his wife with a win. Now the question will be where does the feud go from here?
There is not enough space for me to write down all of the endless possibilities for where this feud is heading. Will Triple H and CM Punk get on the same page? Will Awesome Truth and Kevin Nash form a stable? Will Johnny Ace be revealed to be the mastermind behind everything? On and on and on I could go.
We will have to find out in the coming weeks.
The point is this old feud just got refreshed with Awesome Truth now being in the mix.
