Manchester United vs. Chelsea: Why Fernando Torres Will Never Succeed at Chelsea

Nicholas GossSep 18, 2011

Spanish striker Fernando Torres scored his second goal in a Chelsea uniform today, finished brilliantly past Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, but it was an amazing miss with a wide open net in the second half that will haunt Torres for weeks.

Torres struggles at Chelsea have now risen to a new level and expectations and disappointments that have highlighted his brief tenure at Stamford Bridge are why he will never succeed in a Chelsea jersey.

With the score 3-1 in favor of United during the second half, Torres made a fabulous step over move past United goalkeeper countryman David De Gea and had a wide open net from six yards out.

Torres sent the ball wide to the left with his left foot, missing the goal completely and adding to the hardship that has headlined his Chelsea career. The miss was one of the worst in the history of Premier League football and definitely the worst blunder by Torres in his brilliant career.

When Chelsea bought Torres from Liverpool back in the January transfer window for £50 million, they would never have imagined that Torres would have so much trouble finding the back of the net, especially given his 81 career goals in 102 matches in all competitions while at Liverpool.

In 24 games for Chelsea, Torres has scored just twice and has even been benched at times because of his lack of offense.

With Sunday's disastrous blunder at Old Trafford, Torres' problems appear to be all mental. After the epic misfire Torres looked rattled, battered and void of confidence.

It was a miss you wouldn't wish on anyone and it may be a miss Torres won't recover from. It wasn't just a miss at a glorious chance to get Chelsea back in the game, it was a miss that represents what Torres' Chelsea tenure has become.

For much of his career at Liverpool from 2009 through his transfer in January of 2011, Torres was plagued by injuries and was rarely able to put stretches of good form together. With Chelsea, he has been healthy, which is a concern for their fans.

Torres isn't struggling because he is hurt or has lost his talent, he's struggling because the expectations of him and the club are too great for him to bear.

He was supposed to help Chelsea win the Champions League, but he can't do that when he can't even hit an open net.

Torres will never be a success at Chelsea. The expectations he faces on an individual level and club level are too much for him. After Sunday's disaster, it's time for the Spanish striker to move on from Stamford Bridge.
