Liverpool vs. Tottenham: 5 Key Matchups for Sunday's Clash at White Hart Lane

Thomas AtzenhofferSep 16, 2011

Liverpool and Tottenham have begun to form a bit of a frustrated rivalry over the bottom of the top six in the last two seasons. Spurs held off the Reds in a valiant charge up that table under Kenny Dalglish in the latter half of last season.

This season, so far the Reds have come out of the gates much better, but last weeks results for the two saw Liverpool slump at Stoke City while Spurs triumphed at Wolverhampton's Molineux Stadium.

Harry Redknapp will be hoping that his team is back on track and will be looking to go through Liverpool on Sunday when Spurs come to North London.

Dalglish and his boys will be ready to go despite more injury problems now that Glen Johnson has rejoined the injury list. Steven Gerrard originally planned this game to be his big comeback, but it seems he may be delayed until October.

However, given the situation I could see Gerrard making the bench or even making a surprise start claiming that the earlier news was nothing more than gossip.

Looking ahead here are some key match ups that we will see between the two clubs as they struggle for all three points.

Charlie Adam vs Scott Parker

1 of 6

Another midfield battle will be between the newcomers to both clubs. Charlie Adam is still working out the kinks of his midfield role for the Reds while Tottenham newcomer Scott Parker is also finding his place alongside Luka Modric.

Adam will hope to have his set piece skills come up big, while Parker will hope to repeat his West Ham form against Liverpool from last season.

Gareth Bale vs John Flanagan

2 of 6

Although the Reds' youngster John Flanagan has not gotten much time yet this season, injuries to both Martin Kelly and Glen Johnson may leave Kenny Dalglish with only one other option besides Martin Skrtel if he chooses so.

I could see Flanagan making a start, as he played exceptionally well against big opposition on short notice last season, and this could be a good move to see him tackle Tottenham's talented wide man in Gareth Bale.

Lucas Leiva vs Luka Modric

3 of 6

Lucas Leiva will revive his midfield confrontation with Luka Modric. Both players have become key elements of their respected teams and their battle will see the dominance in the midfield shift back and forth.

Dalglish will hope to see his Brazilian keep up his fine form that he has been riding all through last season and into this year so far.

Emmanuel Adebayor vs Jamie Carragher

4 of 6

In years past when Emmanuel Adebayor was still with Arsenal, he was always a pain in Liverpool's backside. Since his move to Manchester City he has struggled to get regular playing time but his goal against Wolves last week shows he has not forgotten how to put the ball in the back of the net.

Jamie Carragher may be loosing a step or two but the Reds' veteran vice-captain will be looking to use his mental attributes to help position himself and his fellow defenders in the right areas.

Ledley King vs Luis Suarez

5 of 6

If Ledley King is able to start as expected it will be a worth challenge to see when he takes on Luis Suarez. The Spurs captain was once believed the best defensive prospect in England when he rose to prominence for Tottenham, but constant injuries and a body letting him down time after time has seen him suffer.

Luis Suarez has to find the back of the net as his finishing has been poor for two straight games, and if he is not scoring then the Reds are struggling to put W's in the win column.

Conclusion

6 of 6

The Reds have a tough match ahead, but they are more than capable of pulling off a victory if they come to play.

Finishing will be the key to the game for the Reds, as it does them no good to create 22 chances if they cannot convert a single attack into a crowd-pleasing ball that ends up in the back of the net.
