Week 2 Fantasy Football Projections: Will Pats' WR Wes Welker Dominate Chargers?
After his Week 1 dominance against a Miami Dolphins' defense that finished ranked in the top 10 last season, New England Patriots' WR Wes Welker is expected to have another spectacular year.
So to begin, will he strike the lightning bolts from San Diego when they visit the Pats in Week 2?
Well for one, let's look at what he did versus Miami that makes him so dangerous.

For the game he caught eight passes, compiled 160 yards and scored two TDs.
Now, of course, 99 of those yards came on the fourth-quarter TD where he did a catch-and-run, but nonetheless it was a ridiculous performance.
As for when Welker faces San Diego, chances are QB Tom Brady targets him a solid 12-to-15 times, because with safety Eric Weddle over the top to help out the corners, Welker will make his money in the middle range zones (but continuous movement, not just sitting after finding the soft spot).
That being said, it all seemed too easy against Miami, because whether it was man or zone coverage, Welker either found the soft spot or was just too quick to stick with.
The difference with San Diego, however, is that they have a little better pass rush than Miami, despite Cameron Wake playing well.
We know this for sure, the Miami Dolphins had the right idea in trying to attack Tom Brady every which way, but he was just that much better at reading their blitzes, thus making an audible to hot-route Welker (like his first TD catch inside of ten yards).
Therefore this week, don't be surprised to see Welker get a quick triple-team and then ultimately see a double-team as the play develops.
Whichever side he lines up on, the pass rusher to that side will most likely be responsible for jamming Wes at the line of scrimmage (provided he's lined up close enough to the ball).
After that, San Diego should play a one-deep zone with a linebacker manning his inside, while a nickel/dime back mans his outside. The corners will be man coverage on Deion Branch and Chad Ochocinco, and the deep-zone safety helps with anyone trying to stretch the field.
This leaves the other LBs on TEs Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski as well as RBs Danny Woodhead and Benjarvus Green-Ellis.
All this being said, for Welker to dominate he must make plays on quick bubble-screens, reverses or deep crossing routes to where he can out-run his defenders.
Sitting in zones against San Diego won't work, and neither will going deep if he tries to do so.
Make no mistake about it, he can and will dominate this game, but it's just not going to be nearly as easy as it was against Miami.
