Champions League 2011: Arsene Wenger Suffers Another Embarrassment

Ryan RudnanskyJun 5, 2018

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been through a whole lot this season, enough to make a man go crazy.

He was constantly criticized for letting Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri walk and endured a wave of pressure before the transfer window before landing Mikel Arteta.

But after he landed Arteta, things were supposed to ease up for Wenger, who had landed a solid substitute in Fabregas and Nasri's wake.

But Wenger suffered yet another painful moment in Arsenal's 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, seeing his club give away a 1-0 lead in the final minutes after holding off a barrage of offensive attacks from Dortmund throughout a hard-pressed second half.

It was hard to tell what was worse for Wenger: his club's performance or the fact the Gunners allowed a goal when it appeared they might actually come away with the victory.

It also didn't help that Wenger's gameplan was the right one against Dortmund. He defended by simply keeping the ball away from the opposition, and it constantly frustrated Dortmund throughout the match.

But this is Arsenal, the 2011 version, a club that follows good news (the acquisition of Arteta, an early lead) with collapse.

The Gunners started collapsing at the beginning of the offseason, and they haven't done much to keep from folding in on themselves. For every step forward (landing Arteta), there are two steps back (losing Fabregas and Nasri).

If you had to describe Arsenal in one word this season, it would be "maddening." The ironic thing about Monday's draw was that Arsenal showed spurts of composure and solid play on the pitch. But the Gunners were inconsistent, and that inconsistency eventually caught up to them.
