Week 2 Fantasy Football Projections: Will Tom Brady Tear Up Chargers Secondary?

John RozumSep 13, 2011

When the San Diego Chargers visit the New England Patriots in Week 2, QB Tom Brady will have his hands full with Norv Turner's secondary.

For starters, the San Diego defense is much, much better than that of the Miami Dolphins, and they proved it by holding Vikings RB Adrian Peterson under 100 yards rushing (which is pretty impressive even though Minnesota has no passing game).

So when push comes to shove this week at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts, will Tom Brady tear up the Chargers' secondary, or will they shut-down the Pats' aerial assault?

Well for one, it's a safe bet that New England will at least start off slow, as not only can San Diego stop the run, but last week they held Minnesota's Donovan McNabb to only 39 yards passing.

I don't care who you are, and how good or bad someone is in the NFL, to keep a team from eclipsing 40 passing yards in one game is insanely ridiculous, why?

Because it's the NFL and everyone is good.

And, in addition to that, the Chargers have a familiar face in their secondary for QB Tom Brady.

Bob Sanders.

Yes, he's been hurt quite often throughout the previous three NFL seasons, but it's still Bob Sanders, and you must account for him, otherwise you've made a big, big mistake.

That being said, San Diego also has safety Eric Weddle (a 2010 Pro-Bowler) and CB Quentin Jammer (perfect name for CB by the way).

Make no mistake about it, these guys are good, and although Brady is obviously better, this defense is a much stronger challenge than the Miami Dolphins.

Another reason why Brady won't torch the Bolts' secondary is because of their front seven.

Although old, LB Takeo Spikes is still a solid performer, and pass rusher Shaun Phillips is just as good as Cameron Wake of Miami, if not better.

Therefore, expect San Diego to do a lot of blitzing, just like Miami, but expect the Chargers to have more success with it.

In turn, the secondary, for the most part, won't have to be in coverage for more than three seconds at a time.

Now, of course, the Bolts will also give a little because obviously, it's Tom Brady and he's simply just that good.

However, we're not going to see numbers even close to 517 passing yards and four TDs, as well as Brady going 32-of-48.

By game's end, Tom will most likely have compiled somewhere around 250 yards and maybe two TDs.

Based on how well each performed in Week 1, both are significantly giving a little, because Brady's too good to not play well, but the Chargers are also too good to allow any more than 250 yards and a pair of TDs.
