WWE Night of Champions 2011: Why Miz & Truth Must Win to Save Tag Team Division
It wasn't too long ago that the WWE tag team division was filled with capable tandems. In 2009, the likes of JeriShow, DX, The Colons, Cryme Tyme, The Hart Dynasty and many more were putting on highly entertaining tag matches.
All of those teams have broken up over the past year, however, with half of each no longer employed by the WWE.
Just a couple months ago, after Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater split up, the WWE boasted just two legitimate tag teams, The Usos and the then-champions David Otunga and Michael McGillicutty.

This was unquestionably the low point of a division that has been increasingly ignored by the WWE since its peak in the late-1980s and early-1990s.
While never confirmed, it has been reported by The Wrestling Observer, that Triple H is interested in rebuilding the lackluster tag division. If this is indeed true, then the WWE has a very easy decision to make at Night of Champions, and that decision is to allow the team of The Miz and R-Truth to defeat Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne for the Tag Team Championships.
The team of Kingston and Bourne, or "Air Boom" as they were not-so-brilliantly dubbed by the WWE Universe, is not without faults. Neither man is particularly adept on the mic and both possess flashy movesets that involve plenty of high flying and little substance. Even so, putting the titles on Air Boom was necessary as their athleticism trumps Otunga and McGillicutty, both of whom bring nothing to the table.
Both Kingston and Bourne have fairly won over the crowd, particularly younger fans, and form a team that is easy to root for. They alone, however, aren't enough pull the tag team division out of the doldrums. There is one newly-formed team who may be able to do that, though, and that is the team of The Miz and R-Truth.
The WWE has done well to form tag teams using talent that is currently under-utilized. That was done with Kingston and Bourne, and now with The Miz and R-Truth. While both The Miz and R-Truth deserve to be firmly in the upper midcard at the very least, a temporary partnership can do wonders for both of them.
Unlike Air Boom, Miz and Truth weren't randomly paired. They both have a common goal and that is to overcome a supposed conspiracy that Triple H and the WWE have against them. They have appeared together for more than a month and have been exceedingly entertaining each and every time.
Both The Miz and Truth are solid on the mic, and they have an impeccable chemistry with Truth playing the whack job and Miz playing the straight man. It has been an extremely long time since a team with this much personality has been formed, and if the WWE realizes that, then they'll be given a run with the straps.
As much as some would like to believe that Air Boom is being counted on to rejuvenate the tag division, they look much more like placeholder champions. The WWE has likely been planning on putting the belts on Miz and Truth for a while, but they needed a likable face team to take the belts off Otunga and McGillicutty for the time being.
Both Miz and Truth have great futures as singles competitors, but a few months as Tag Team Champions would go a long way in making people care about the division again. Putting the belts on Miz and Truth would be a safe proposition and allow the WWE brass more time to develop other teams.
If done correctly, The Miz and R-Truth can be the team responsible for revitalizing a WWE tag team division that was on life support a few short months ago. Make no mistake, The Miz and R-Truth winning the titles at Night of Champions would be awesome. And that's the truth.
