Danny Amendola Injury: Worst Possible Scenario for Rams WR Has Been Avoided

Eric BallSep 12, 2011

At least it’s not a season-ending injury.

That’s what the St. Louis Rams are thinking after hearing the latest update on wide receiver Danny Amendola. He has dislocated his left elbow, but will not be undergoing surgery.

The Texas Tech alum will be out of the lineup for 4-6 weeks. ESPN’s Adam Schefter has speculated that he could return after the team’s Week 6 bye.

The 25-year-old left Sunday’s loss against the Philadelphia Eagles with an arm injury in the fourth quarter that looked bad at first glance. Amendola was in some serious pain and the FOX broadcast refused to replay the gruesome injury.

The team feared the worse, and was pleasantly surprised by the news.

Amendola had big expectations heading into his third year with the Rams. He was expected to be the No. 1 target for QB Sam Bradford and the improved St. Louis offense. It looked like that was the game plan as he had five receptions for 45 yards before the injury.

Now they will have to incorporate guys like Mike Sims-Walker and Brandon Gibson much more. Sims-Walker had a very disappointing Rams debut. The big signing in free agency was almost non-existent, making one catch for five yards. Three separate occasions Bradford threw the ball in his direction and the communication and chemistry just wasn’t there as the ball fell to the turf for an incomplete pass.

Gibson led the team with 50 yards and will be a huge factor in Amendola’s absence.

As for Amendola, there isn’t whole lot he can do right. Rest the elbow and hope the deep bruise heals up quickly.

The injury may turn into a pain tolerance situation and it will be up to Amendola to determine that. In the meantime, fantasy owners should zero in on Sims-Walker and Gibson as great replacements.
