WWE News: WWE Network Is Coming; 5 Shows That Could Get the Network Going
For those of you who braved through Vince McMahon Michael Cole's incessant arguing with Jim Ross and watched RAW, you may have been pleased to discover the WWE is finally rolling out their own television network come 2012.
While WWE's business is currently slumping, seeds have slowly been planted for the company to make a revival of sorts. While this revival may not bring about a third golden age of wrestling, circumstances such as the tag team wrestling influence and slightly more emphasis on women's wrestling have already been indicative of Triple H's productively traditionalist views.
The WWE Network could be yet another step in the right direction, and if successful, will be a huge factor in turning WWE's business woes around, as I mentioned in Tuesday's B/R video entry.
The key to this network will be unique programming in addition to proficient use of WWE's substantial video library.
With as many entertaining and talented individuals as there are in WWE, the array of programming ideas practically jump off the page.
1. Z! True Long Island Story
1 of 5Zack Ryder has captured lightning in a bottle with his Z! True Long Island Story show on Youtube. With the WWE Network in search of new programming, this would be the perfect transition for Ryder to take his popular show to the next step.
Ryder has amassed over four million views on the strength of 29 short videos documenting his less than spectacular life as a bottomfeeder on the WWE 's totem pole.
30 minutes with Zack Ryder may be too much of a good thing, but the show could feature matches of Ryder and associated acts such as Kurt Hawkins and Primo Colon to be used as "filler" in addition to Ryder's running gags.
Ryder could even defend the Internet Championship at the end of every show to keep the program in the spirit of professional wrestling.
After defending the title successfully on a series of occasions, imagine the ratings for the episode arch where Ryder goes on "the chase."
2. Santino's Casa
2 of 5Several months ago, there were rumbles of a Santino Marella sitcom on the WWE Network featuring Santino Marella and then-best friend Vladimir Koslov.
But Koslov has since been fired and Santino's comedic heat has been scooped up by Zack Ryder.
The perfect way to reinvent the talented Italian would be to relaunch his character on a standard sitcom featuring a best friend character and a love interest.
Santino's Casa used to be featured show on WWE.com, and it wasn't half bad. Given the proper creative team, Santino's Casa could be a hit.
3. A WWE Reality Show
3 of 5I'm not talking about Tough Enough, but an unprecedented, behind-the-scenes WWE reality show chronicling the backstage incidents that dirt sheet readers and writers cannot live without.
A show detailing the backstage politicking, backstabbing and drama that goes into your typical wrestling production would be gold in a television format.
And if this idea is too much in Vince McMahon's "it's still real to me" world, perhaps a show along the lines of 24/7 would be more appropriate as it documented the events leading up to a high profile main event between two pro wrestlers.
4. WWE Ribb'd
4 of 5Pranks and ribbing will probably always be a part of the pro wrestling culture, so why not use this noted wrestling pastime to WWE's creative advantage?
A candid camera-like show centered around various pranks and gags of pro wrestlers is almost guaranteed to be entertaining based on some of the ribs I have heard of and seen alone.
If any show-runner wanted to peak Vince McMahon's interest about airing a WWE prank show, he could suggest Jim Ross as the first victim.
5. WWE Divas: No Boys Allowed
5 of 5Sure, I haven't had the nicest things to say about the WWE Divas as of late, but that's because I want them to succeed and they just haven't been getting the job done.
An hour-long all-Divas show could change this as Divas are typically featured scarcely on WWE TV.
There is no doubt that the WWE Divas work hard, and if they were given more time to develop their characters and skill sets on an full length television show, this would only improve the WWE Divas division as a whole.
