WWE: 10 Potential Main-Event Wrestlers Who Will Never Be WWE or World Champion

Daniel MasseyJun 7, 2018

There are many top stars in the history of the WWE that have been main-event stars without holding the top belt at the time.

In more recent years, these top belts flitted from person to person, devaluing the prestigious nature of the title, making superstars who are now relegated to mid/lower-card slots ex-champions.

The WWE seems to have got this back in check now, though, and seems to be building stars properly.

Sheamus has started again, properly this time, and is a main-event star on SmackDown, despite not holding the belt since his rise from the bottom of the barrel.

I have made a list of 10 superstars who have the potential to be main-event stars and captivate audiences around the world, but will never hold the top title.

Enjoy!

Evan Bourne

1 of 11

Evan Bourne is spectacular in the ring—even his entrance defies physics.

Does anyone else know how he manages to enter the ring feet first?

His finisher can only be described as amazing as he flies through the sky in a reverse somersault.

I have no doubt that Evan Bourne could hold his own at a main-event level, but I don’t think he could carry the company and draw viewers in each and every night.

If he held the top belt, I have to say I think interest would wane in the product, and they would have to give the belt to someone who fits that stereotypical image.

R-Truth

2 of 11

R-Truth just recently had a major push to the main-event scene and has been in the best form I’d say he’s ever been in.

He has the whole package: his character is solid, his ring work is decent and he can cut an immense promo.

What more does a guy need?

Not a lot, in my opinion, and I can’t understand why he wasn’t made champion.

Now he has joined the tag team revival and looks to be out of the main-event scene.

As he comes towards the end of his career, I have to believe he won't get a better opportunity than he already had.

Sin Cara

3 of 11

Sin Cara could, without a doubt, be the new Rey Mysterio, especially when he retires.

However, I think that the character will continue to face issues due to the ring work by both Huni-Cara and Misti-Cara.

With this getting in the way, I don’t think Sin Cara will have the longevity of Rey Mysterio.

On the other hand, it is early in the career of Sin Cara, so there is no reason why in a few years he could be wowing the audience night in and night out with fluid movements as he glides through the sky effortlessly.

I guess we’ll just have to see how the inevitable Sin Cara vs. Sin Cara plays out...

Cody Rhodes

4 of 11

Cody Rhodes is the current Intercontinental Champion.

He states he will bring prestige back to the title.

If he is successful in doing this, then I see him challenging for the top titles within the next two years.

However, what is more likely is that he will lose the title before he has a chance to make people respect the championship.

Then, when he does eventually move onto the main event, he will not be as respected and therefore, will not be taken seriously as a champion. Inevitably, he spend the rest of his days in the mid-card.

Alex Riley

5 of 11

Alex Riley is an up-and-coming star who got his face on live television every week thanks to The Miz.

He showed his explosive nature when he turned on his former protégé, and I must admit it gave me chills when I watched it—it was awesome, to say the least.

Nevertheless, in his current gimmick, or lack thereof, there is no way Alex Riley could carry the company.

He needs something that the audience can invest in.

He is definitely not far off from becoming a main-event star—granted, he needs a mid-card title, but he has the right look, the right theme music and is fairly good on the mic.

Despite this, I’m not sure he will end up ever challenging for the top titles in the business.

Ezekiel Jackson

6 of 11

Ezekiel Jackson has the perfect look for a main-event superstar: he is a huge mass of muscle.

As Jerry “The King” Lawler would say, he has muscles in places I don’t even have places.

He has just finished his reign as Intercontinental Champion and could be moving up to the main event soon as he is being portrayed as unstoppable.

Jackson will not get a chance at the top title because there is simply an abundance of superstars who I think could do it a lot better than him—not to mention, he is awful on the microphone.

Kofi Kingston

7 of 11

The first episode of Raw I watched in seven years showed Kofi Kingston owning Randy Orton in Madison Square Garden.

In all honesty, it was seeing this young rookie I’d never heard of taking it to someone who I had been half following in my seven-year hiatus that revitalised my love with wrestling.

It wasn’t long after this main-event push that he was pushed back down to the mid-card.

Many, if not most, people blame Randy Orton for this over an argument regarding Kofi’s positioning in a match on Raw.

Regardless of why he was dropped back down, I don’t see him gaining main-event status any time soon, despite his ridiculously good abilities in the ring, especially since he is now a Tag-Team Champion.

Drew McIntyre

8 of 11

This Scottish hopeful joined the WWE in 2009, debuting as "The Chosen One."

Vince McMahon’s personal project was looking to make an impact and possibly even take one of the top titles in the business.

I was actually in favour of Drew gaining one of these titles, but it seems he is destined to roam the mid-card for the rest of time.

Mind you, it’s been so long since I’ve seen him on one of the main shows that he might even have trouble staying there.

Ted DiBiase

9 of 11

Ted DiBiase could be brilliant if he had the right gimmick and enough time to get over.

I do actually believe he has the potential to be a main-event superstar just like his father before him, but it isn’t going to happen while he is just packaged as some guy.

Ted just gives off such a boring vibe at the moment that it is hard to believe he could even hold a mid-card title without everyone just laughing at him.

I think a character tweak is needed and fast. I still don’t think he would be a top-tier champion, though, even if he did eventually make it to the main event.

John Morrison

10 of 11

John Morrison is probably the most likely superstar on the list to make me look stupid and win the top prize in the business.

It is such a shame that he keeps getting injured at key points in his development.

I believe the recent injury was extremely detrimental to his quest to become the next WWE Champion.

A little work on his promos and John Morrison would be the full package, no arguments.

He has the right look, he brings something special to the table with his parkour style and he is extremely entertaining and capable in the ring.

Hopefully he will make it right to the top one day.

These 10 superstars all have the potential to main event WWE programming, I just don’t think they will win the top titles in the business.

What do you think? Is there anyone I have missed, or do you agree with the list?
