UFC 137's Carlos Condit on Facing Georges St-Pierre: "The Timing Was Perfect"
After skipping both yesterday and today's pre-fight press conferences to promote a championship headliner opposite Georges St-Pierre (22-2 MMA, 16-2 UFC), Nick Diaz has been replaced and will no longer fight at UFC 137.
Diaz is widely known for his dislike in dealing with media, but now it's cost him a chance at the division's championship.
UFC 137 will take place Oct. 29 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
In to fill the void is former WEC welterweight champion Carlos "The Natural Born Killer" Condit, who was previously scheduled to face B.J. Penn.
“The timing was perfect for this to all come together,” Condit stated through a press release from his management. “First, I want to thank the UFC for allowing me this opportunity and also my agent, Malki Kawa, who saw an opening and took advantage of it. With me already fighting on that card, I will need to make some adjustments to get ready for a new opponent, but my actual training is still right on schedule.”
Condit (27-5 MMA, 4-1 UFC) steps directly into the headliner fresh off a devastating knockout victory against Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 132.
Additionally, Condit brings in a four-fight win streak that includes three knockouts and hasn't seen defeat since 2009.
At first glance it may seem that the interesting part of the whole situation is where does Greg Jackson fit into everything. Jackson coaches both St-Pierre and Condit.
Condit spends his full camp at the Jackson-Winkeljohn camp in Albuquerque, N.M., while Jackson often travels to Canada in order to work with St-Pierre.
However, when contacted about the matchup, Jackson told BleacherReport.com that he will stay out of the championship headliner.
"Well, I stay out of it as per teammate protocols," Jackson said via text.
