Lesnar vs Overeem Be Bigger Than Velasquez vs. Dos Santos?

Matt JuulSep 7, 2011

There has been no better time to be a fan of the UFC's heavyweight division.

Right on the heels of the announced plan to showcase the championship bout between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos on the UFC's first event on FOX, the promotion announced yesterday that they have signed former Strikeforce Heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem.

Not only will Overeem be the newest member of the UFC, he will take on former champion Brock Lesnar in one of the biggest fights of the year on December 30th.

With two major heavyweight battles planned for back-to-back months, the hype is set for who will take this mini tournament for UFC gold.

Fans have a reason to be excited for both fights because of the skill set that each of these fighters' possess. But does the news of two of the sport's biggest names set to face each other eclipse the importance of a title fight?

There is no question that Lesnar versus Overeem is a big deal. Both fighters are huge names in the MMA world and their presence in the Octagon generates incredible buzz.

Not only is it a match-up of former Zuffa champions, but it is a stylistic battle as well.

Lesnar is the strong wrestler who will look to take the fight to the ground. Overeem, the accomplished K-1 champion, will obviously try to keep the fight standing. Both guys are known for their intense style and power, but in reality, they are not the top two fighters in the division.

Overeem is on a five year undefeated streak, but many of his wins are over lower tier fighters. His latest win over Fabricio Werdum is notable, but not the best performance of his career.

Earlier in his career, Overeem struggled against the bigger names in the sport but has advanced by leaps and bounds since his days at light-heavyweight.

Lesnar, on the other hand, ha taken on some of the best in the UFC and done fairly well. However, his MMA career is still quite young and his striking needs to improve dramatically.

Both men are highly skilled in their respective styles, but overall, Velasquez and dos Santos are more well rounded.

Velasquez, the champion, is undefeated and has powered through everyone of his opponents.  He has a crisp set of strikes and superb wrestling. Dos Santos is a fantastic striker as well and has a solid ground game.

The number of big names these guys have put down is scary and they deserve to be billed as the bigger fight. They are a combined 22-1 with 16 knockouts, eight a piece, on their resume.

Both fighters are still relatively young and in their prime, a true battle of the top two heavyweights in the world.

For those wanting to watch a technically sound yet brutally powerful fight, Velasquez and dos Santos takes the cake. This is a title fight after all and these two fighters are the best in the division.

Overeem and Lesnar may have the hype due to their big names, but the UFC on FOX headliner has the most implications for the future of the division and should be a better match-up overall.
