College Football Rankings 2011: Will Boise State Ever Make It to BCS Title Game?
It's becoming rather clear that the Boise State Broncos have to go undefeated to have a chance at the BCS Championship Game, let alone get into a BCS bowl game.
In the last three seasons, Boise State has lost a grand total of two games, one against TCU in the 2008 Poinsettia Bowl.
But TCU may have crippled Boise State once again, and the two haven't even played each other yet in 2011.
That's because TCU lost to unranked Baylor on Friday, 50-48, looking nothing like the No. 14 team in the nation.
Why does that affect the Broncos? Because the No. 1 reason the Broncos have yet to make it to the BCS Championship Game has been because of their schedule, which hasn't been stacked with ranked opponents throughout the years. They only play two teams ranked in the top 25 to start out the season in 2011, and one of them is TCU.
Never mind that they handily beat the other ranked team, Georgia, on Saturday, 35-21. Never mind that they've defeated seven of the eight non-conference ranked teams they've faced since 2008. Never mind that they have consistently been a top-five team the last three years.
The truth of the matter is, no matter how much it hurts Boise State fans, their victory over Georgia on Saturday may mean nothing in the long run. Even with the victory, a win against TCU will likely not mean as much given TCU's loss, and that projects them to go undefeated and still miss out on the BCS Championship Game.
The reality is, last season was their best chance to make it to the title game—when they had Virginia Tech and Oregon State on their schedule and defeated them soundly. Unfortunately, Nevada dashed their hopes in the second-to-last game of the regular season.
And to think the Broncos moved from the WAC to the MWC this season to improve their chances of making it all the way. All it really does is give them more matchups against unranked opponents that could be trap games.
