Wrestling Q&A #1: Roster Merge, Reality Era, Singers at WrestleMania, More

Eric KanesSep 3, 2011

What's up, ladies and gentlemen? My name is Eric Kanes and this is the first edition of a weekly series that I am going to be doing. Earlier this week, I asked my Facebook friends to send in some pro wrestling questions. I then chose the best ones and answered them in the video above. Here is a transcript of the questions that I answered:

Q: Which singer (dead or alive) would you want to see at WrestleMania?

A: I honestly don't know how to answer this one because I love music but I don't want to see any singers at WrestleMania, especially not dead ones. But if I have to choose one, I'd have to go with Chris Jericho. Pretty obvious answer there.

Q: Are you a fan of the current roster merge?

A: Yes, I am 100% a fan of the roster merge for several reasons. Number one, it gives pay-per-views a lot more build-up. Shows like Hell in a Cell that would otherwise only have two weeks of build-up now have four shows of build-up so it really helps with that. Plus, now there's a bunch of fresh feuds. You can only watch so many Christian vs. Randy Orton and CM Punk vs. John Cena matches before it gets old. With the roster merge, we can see guys from RAW feuding with guys from SmackDown so it really freshens things up.

The main argument against the roster merge is that now the mid-carders will get less time but honestly, the mid-card is such a mess right now. I mean, look at the Dolph Ziggler-Vickie Guerrero-Alex Riley stuff going on on RAW right now. Is that what you really want to see? I'd much rather have the more important feuds getting more build-up time than see some crappy mid-card feud but that could be just me.

Q: If all of the championships were merged, who would you have as champions?

A: Alright, so I'm assuming this is asking who I'd have as the champions right now so that's what I'm going to go with. As the tag team champions, I'd have The Miz and R-Truth because having them as champions keeps them relevant and increases the prestige of the championship by that much. I'd keep the titles on them for several months, up until WrestleMania would be ideal, and then once The Kings of Wrestling or The Young Bucks (if they sign with WWE) are ready to come up, they can defeat The Miz & R-Truth and it gives them a lot of momentum in return rather than if they just defeat a team like The Usos or Michael McGillicutty & David Otunga.

As the Diva's Champion, I'd have Beth Phoenix and I'd give her a monster run because let's be honest, NOBODY thinks Kelly Kelly is a credible champion and she will never be one unless she is built up properly. With that said, I'd probably bring in Trish Stratus and do backstage vignettes where she trains Kelly Kelly for several months and then a couple months later, Kelly returns and triumphs over Beth Phoenix. At that point, she can actually be taken seriously rather than the joke of a champion that she is now.

As the Midcard champion, United States or Intercontinental, I'd probably have John Morrison since he's one of the more over upper midcarders and I'd use that championship as a stepping stone to the main event rather than a you know, useless belt, like it is now. I'd have guys like John Morrison, Alberto Del Rio, and Sheamus competing for this title - you know, guys who are on the brink of becoming main eventers but not quite there and that in turn, should give both the championship and anybody who holds it some much needed prestige.

Finally, as the WWE World Champion, I'm thinking I'd keep it on either Randy Orton or Mark Henry and have them have a monster reign leading up to WrestleMania. I mean, I'd make the champion completely unbeatable. At WrestleMania, Daniel Bryan can "overcome the odds" and defeat them after a nice, 20-minute match, transferring that momentum over to him, and making a believable champion out of him. This would work a lot better than just shoehorning him into the main event scene like they did with guys like Jack Swagger and Alberto Del Rio.

And there you go.

Q: Out of all the lower mid-carders, who do you see moving up in the rankings and becoming an upper mid-carder/title holder?

A: Now, I’ll emphasize the fact that this question is asking who will move up in the rankings and not who should move up in the rankings. That immediately eliminates guys like Trent Barretta and Tyson Kidd who are talented, no doubt, but I just don’t see them being elevated anytime soon and that’s one of the reasons why I really want to see the cruiserweight championship brought back. It would be a simple way of getting these guys over and putting them in contention for a title without actually making any drastic changes.

Back to the question, my answer may be predictable but I’ve got to go with Zack Ryder. He’s young, talented, charismatic, popular, and extremely over with the top guys backstage so I think he’ll be elevated sooner or later. He’s already getting more and more airtime each week so I think it’s only a matter of time.

Q: What do you think of WWE dropping both The Nexus and Anonymous RAW GM angles without any acknowledgement?

A: Honestly, those angles were both so stale that it didn’t really make much of a difference. First of all, The Nexus should’ve been killed off way back in March when Randy Orton punted them all in the head. Husky Harris has been sent back to FCW, which is good, but to be honest, David Otunga and Michael McGillicutty should both still be in FCW with him.

As for the Anonymous GM angle, again, it was so horrible that I don’t think anyone really minds it being dropped without an explanation.

Q: What do you think of the so-called "Reality Era?" Do you think it's too early to proclaim the beginning of a new era being just a month and a half after CM Punk's shoot promo or is it truly the beginning of such an era?

A: Personally, I think it’s definitely too early to say that we’re in a new era. First of all, what is an era? The official definition is “a period of time marked by distinctive characters, events, etcetera.” So far, in this “Reality Era” we haven’t seen anything too distinctive. Granted, we’ve seen one good feud between CM Punk and John Cena, which has had some reality mixed into it, but everything else has pretty much been the same, PG-era stuff.

Look at RAW and the stuff going on with Dolph Ziggler, Vickie Guerrero, and Alex Riley as a prime example. Those segments have brought us some of the worst acting I’ve ever seen. Hell, look no further than the current WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio. His promos just seem so…forced that it’s not even funny.

So the final verdict here is – no. We’ve had one really good feud thus far but the undercard is still lacking. If one good feud means that we’re in a new era, then what era was the CM Punk/Jeff Hardy feud in? What era was the Nexus/John Cena feud in? That's really all I have to say on this topic.
