WWE Night Of Champions: 7 Bold Predictions For the Next PPV
Night of Champions is only 16 days away and every title match, including one without a title on the line, is taking shape.
This will be the fifth pay-per-view with the Night of Champions name attached to it. Outside of the inaugural Vengeance: Night of Champions in 2007, every other year saw at least three new champions crowned.
Last year's Night of Champions saw four new champions, so what can we expect this year?
Well, there are some things to expect and believe are typical predictions. However, even WWE has been known to surprise people in recent weeks and months.
Here are some not-so-safe predictions to make, which may end up being accurate in the end anyway.
Alberto Del Rio Leaves as WWE Champion
1 of 7We might as well start with the WWE Championship, which will see Alberto Del Rio defend against John Cena.
With Del Rio being booked terribly and not being on television with visa issues, WWE is not doing a good job of making us believe that Del Rio can retain that title.
That may exactly be why Del Rio will leave Buffalo as champion.
Del Rio may use a submission as his finisher and Cena has rarely tapped out in his career, but Del Rio has the champion's advantage.
It's simple to say that Del Rio will get himself DQ'd, retaining the title and keeping Cena away from the world title until Survivor Series, where The Rock's return will distract Cena until WrestleMania.
Mark Henry/Randy Orton Not a One-Time Deal
2 of 7Mark Henry has his best chance to become a world champion when he tries to defeat Randy Orton with the World Heavyweight Championship on the line.
Since May, Orton has been competing with Christian. Now that Orton has defended his title inside a steel cage, it is officially Henry's chance to try to win the title.
Orton feuded with Christian for four months over the title he holds today. The least that they could do is make Henry, the strongest heel they have built on the entire brand, more than a one-time opponent.
Give Henry a loss by countout or DQ. Henry could even win through one of those channels. A clean win without any reason for a second chance would not do Henry any good and would weaken Orton's top opponent.
Dolph Ziggler Loses the United States Championship
3 of 7Now at 75 days, Dolph Ziggler is the longest-reigning champion in WWE at the moment.
That will likely end at Night of Champions, freeing him up for a chance at a world title picture. Remember what happened the night he lost his Intercontinental Championship?
He became the number one contender for the World Heavyweight Championship at Royal Rumble.
It will take a little bit longer, but Ziggler proved once again that he can be a main eventer in his match on RAW against Randy Orton.
As for the new United States Champion, my money is on Jack Swagger. Ziggler can use his feud with the All-American American to bring this match on.
A torn Vickie Guerrero may be more of a hurt than a help and inadvertently cost Ziggler the title. Upon the rematch, Vickie can do her turn on Ziggler, aligning with Swagger and turning Ziggler face for the first time.
Cody Rhodes vs Ted DiBiase for Intercontinental Championship
4 of 7Sorry, Ezekiel Jackson. Cody Rhodes needs a real test for his Intercontinental Championship.
Look no further than his former ally, Ted DiBiase. DiBiase has been looking for a way to break off on his own, without the help of Legacy, Rhodes, Maryse or his Hall of Fame lineage.
The perfect way to do so may by beating Rhodes for his Intercontinental Championship.
For those who have all but given up on DiBiase, this match, win or lose, is important to DiBiase's future as a significant player in the business.
As for Rhodes, despite being a young guy still, he carries himself like a veteran and can do the rare feat of getting someone over when he is still young himself.
Team "AirBoom" Loses to the Awesome Truth
5 of 7Yes, it is blasphemy. I called AirBoom (God, I hate that name) the answer to the tag team division and now I want to take the titles away from them? I must be nuts.
Then again, one of my arguments was that they are only as good as their competition.
You have to get R-Truth and The Miz over as a team and the tag titles can do that, just like they did with Bourne and Kingston.
These two can make one another better and better, which can then be used to bring in other teams. This is where you come in, Usos.
Beth Phoenix Will Not Win Divas Championship
6 of 7Last month, Beth Phoenix was rolled up at SummerSlam and lost her match against Kelly Kelly.
While it is not confirmed just yet, it is all but assumed that the two will have a rematch at Night of Champions.
The match would be in Phoenix's hometown of Buffalo. Surely, this means a title change, right? Maybe not.
They need to make people believe that Kelly Kelly is a formidable foe and a good champion. Without her, the title would go on Phoenix and she would exchange it back and forth with Natalya for all of eternity.
What better unexpected moment than to have a hometown girl that is a clear favorite NOT win the match?
CM Punk/Triple H Is Unofficial WWE Title No. 1 Contender's Match
7 of 7Triple H returns to the ring for the first time since his WrestleMania match with The Undertaker by taking on CM Punk.
Punk gets a non-title match at Night of Champions for the second straight year.
The winner will have to pay some attention to the John Cena/Alberto Del Rio match. CM Punk has a rematch clause that still needs to be satisfied, so he would seem to be next in line for the winner.
However, Triple H is the COO and call pull his weight around. He doesn't like Punk's attitude and has butted heads with Cena in the past. Hunter can also easily not be a fan of Del Rio.
This all translates into a potential number one contender's match between The Game and The Voice of the Voiceless. Imagine if the COO gets a future world title match and how much that will anger the rest of the competition.
It could happen, especially if Kevin Nash has any say in the match. That might not happen, especially if Nash tries to make it out to the ring while the match is going on. At his rate, he will never make it to ringside in time.
Follow me on Twitter to talk about WWE and I will promise to respond to any mentions faster than Kevin Nash runs a 40-yard dash.
