WWE News: Why Triple H Beating CM Punk at Night of Champions Makes Sense

Alfred KonuwaSep 2, 2011

The internet's collective nail-biting over the booking of CM Punk's character has come a bit earlier than expected, as the WWE took emergency measures and booked him in a match against Triple H in place of the physically challenged Kevin Nash.

Premature outcries have already descended upon the pro wrestling world wide web, as CM Punk/Anti-Triple H fans fear for the worst.

The announcement of Triple H's first wrestling match in five months brings about memories of Triple H's not-so-flattering track record as a backstage politician, aimed only at getting himself over.

Given the fact that Punk and Triple H are just outside of the embryonic phase of a full-blown feud, with Nash hovering in the distance, it is highly likely that Triple H will be victorious in their initial showdown at WWE Night of Champions.

A would-be victory for Triple H would be immediately perceived by many in a negative light, as the assumption would be that the 42-year-old is up to his old tricks of "getting himself over."

While Triple H is not without his faults, I have long since felt that criticisms of him being a greedy, glory hound are unfair. We're talking about a Hall of Fame-caliber performer in Triple H, who spent four consecutive WrestleManias putting talent over—talent including Batista, John Cena and Randy Orton, who would go on to evolve into today's top superstars.

For this reason, a Triple H victory at Night of Champions shouldn't be perceived as "bad for business." After all, long-term plans could call for a blow-off that could further Triple H, CM Punk and/or the WWE in general.

While there is no telling where this angle is ultimately going, there still appear to be plans for a CM Punk-Kevin Nash encounter (possibly at WWE Hell in the Cell, next month) should Nash's physical fiasco be cleared up.

An already-rumored Survivor Series matchup between team CM Punk and team Triple H also seems to be on the books.

Subsequent showdowns wouldn't have nearly as much intrigue in them if CM Punk gets his happy ending just over a month into what should be a lengthy feud between him and Triple H.

This feud will continue.

The money is in the chase.

It's worth mentioning that we still don't know who sent the text, and will probably not know for several weeks. I don't foresee a CM Punk victory in any capacity until after this information is revealed, which in all likelihood will be well after WWE Night of Champions.
