Is It My Imagination or Has 2008 Not Been as Good as 2007?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about the economy. I know that 2008 has sucked if you've got a 401-K, a UK pension, or you make money off the Japanese stock market.
I'm talking about college football.
It's funny, because I should be UP on the 2008 College Football season.
Here's why:
1) In 2007 Penn State wasn't one game away from winning the Big Ten and going to the Rose Bowl, and they certainly weren't 10-1.
2) In 2007 Michigan made a Jan 1 Bowl. This year they won't make a bowl. Ha ha ha.
3) In 2007 my two most disliked coaches- Clemson's Jeff Bowden and Tennessee's Philip Fulmer had jobs safe for the next season. Not the case in 2008. Bowden's was out midseason and Fulmer's thrown in the towel (and a big one at that) for 2009.
4) I went to the most unbelievable game of football, which will be forever known in Austin, Texas as 'THAT' game, the Texas vs. OU game at the Cotton Bowl. If you haven't seen the highlights, then go to my blog.
5) In 2007 USC shot themselves in the foot by losing at home to Stanford. This year they hammered Ohio State (always great news), but lost at Oregon State (also great news if you consider PSU annihilated them earlier on this year making the Lions look better).
But for some reason I'm not.
1) Maybe it's because in 2007 PSU didn't lose its games in heartbreaking fashion. We were terrible against both Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Illinois in 2007 and thoroughly deserved the 'L'. In 2008, I'm still wanting to go to 'Hate Iowa Anonymous.'
2) Maybe it's because the BCS, once again, is a complete joke. If Alabama and Texas Tech both run the table, then everything might be OK. But if Alabama lose to a red-hot Florida (which I think they will), and Texas Tech loses to Oklahoma next week (which I think it will), then you've got NINE one loss teams in the Top 10, all with a pretty equal shout of inclusion in the BCS National Title Game. Then it'll be down to a stupid computer, the Harris Poll, and the Coaches' poll. Dear God...
3) Maybe it's because we haven't seen upsets coming out of our ears. Last season there didn't seem to be a week gone that a No. 1 or No. 2 team lost. This week has been a little more, well, orderly. My heart skips a beat just thinking back to it.
