Greatest NBA Players To NOT Play In A Major College Conference
ALL NON MAJOR COLLEGE CONFERENCE NBA TEAM
To be on this list of The Greatest NBA Players to go to NON Major college conferences, a player may NOT have gone to any of these conferences:
ACC, BIG EAST, BIG 10, BIG 12, SEC, AND PAC 10.
The Player also must have went to college.
The player also had to have played in the NBA, but could have played in the ABA, as long as they also played in NBA
*DISCLAIMER* I am NOT a NBA expert, this list is my opinion.
Starting PG – John Stockton (1989-1990) (Gonzaga) He could score sure...But something he did better than anyone else in history was pass the ball and steal the ball. No. 1 All Time in the NBA with Assists, and Steals.
Reserve PG – Bob Cousy (1956-1957) (Holy Cross) – He was the original great PG. Magic Johnson and "Pistol Pete" among others modeled themselves after Cousy. He was a major factor in eight Celtic Championships and was also the first PG to win the MVP
Starting SG – George Gervin (1979-1980) (Eastern Michigan/Long Beach State) – The “Iceman” could score from anywhere on anyone period. Gervin averaged 26.2 PPG in his NBA career.
Reserve SG – Clyde Drexler (Houston) (1988-1989) – Clyde was a member of PHI SLAMMA JAMMA. He had some of the best speed off of the dribble and was one of the best finishers ever. Clyde did not just score either he was an all around player. He played D and rebounded very well also.
Starting SF – Larry Bird (Indiana State) (1984-1985) – Larry Legend. This is a no brainer.
Reserve SF – Elgin Baylor (Seattle University) (1961-1962) – This was tough and between Dr. J and Elgin, but Elgin gets the edge. A very underrated player who averaged about 27 PPG in his career and nearly 14 rebounds.
Starting PF – Karl Malone (Louisiana Tech) (1989-1990) – "The Mailman" always delivered. Rain, Snow, Hail whatever. Karl Malone is the No. 2 All time points scored player in NBA history. And was also a very strong rebounder. Although I am NOT a Mailman fan you have to respect him if you are a basketball fan.
Reserve PF – Elvin Hayes (Houston) (1968 -1969)– In his rookie year, he led the NBA in scoring, and added 17 boards PPG that year. And he didn’t stop there. In the end of his career he averaged 21 PPG and 12.5 RPG. His second year he was the first player to lead the NBA in rebounding since 1957 OTHER than Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell—some nice company there.
Starting C – Hakeem Olajuwon (Houston) (1988-1989) – UH has been a staple on this list. Olajuwon was another member of PHI SLAMMA JAMMA at Houston. Hakeem averaged almost 22 PPG and about 11 Rebounds PPG over his illustrious career. Another tough choice, but I gave Olajuwon the edge over Russell for his point scoring.
Reserve C – Bill Russell (San Francisco) (1959-1960)– Olajuwon and Russell are probably 1a and 1b. Bill Russell averaged about 15 PPG but his rebounding is what made him so great. Bill averaged 22 RPG over his career. Not to mention was a great on the Boston Celtics of the past.
That ladies and gentlemen was my list of the Greatest NBA Players of NON Major DI Colleges of all time. I thank you for checking it out. And again I’m no expert so be nice!
