UFC 134: The Best Quotes from the Fighters Leading Up to the Event in Brazil
The UFC returns to Brazil for the first time in 13 years Saturday night, and they are bringing a stacked card featuring some of the best fighters to ever fight out of the country.
Most of the fighters on the card do their talking in the cage, but each let the public know where their motivation comes from for their upcoming bouts.
In the main event, UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva defends his title against Yushin Okami in a rematch of a 2006 bout that Silva lost by disqualification.
The co-main event features former UFC light heavyweight champions Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Forrest Griffin, who will also be competing in a rematch of a fight from UFC 76 that Griffin won.
Other main card bouts include Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Brendan Schaub, Edson Barboza vs. Ross Pearson and Stanislav Nedkov vs. Luiz Cane.
Edson Barboza: I’m Gonna Let My Game Go and Find out Where the Cracks Are in His
1 of 8"I’m gonna let my game go and find out where the cracks are in his." From UFC promo.
Edson Barboza is one of the younger prospects to come out of Brazil, and he puts his 9-0 record on the line against Ultimate Fighter winner Ross Pearson in a lightweight matchup on the PPV portion of the card.
In a UFC interview, Barboza hinted as to how he goes about preparing for his opponents.
He focuses more on what he is primarily good at, which is muay-thai, and works around that.
He has no plans of letting Pearson use his experience to put him in an uncomfortable position. This makes the 25-year-old a very dangerous fighter.
Rousimar Palhares: “My Muscles Were Built with a Lot of Effort”
2 of 8“My muscles weren’t built in a fitness room. My muscles were built with a lot of effort.”
Rousimar Palhares is known for his strength, and it comes from his stalky frame after a lifelong position of being the hardest worker at whatever he does.
He will have to test his brutal strength against the toughness of Dan Miller, and that makes for a very intriguing middleweight fight on the Spike TV fight card.
If Palhares can submit Miller, who has never been finished despite having five losses, it will be a big statement made in the 185 pound division.
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira: “I’m Going to Kill. I’m Not Going to Die.”
3 of 8“I’m going to kill. I’m not going to die.” From UFC promo.
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira might not have many fights left in his career.
He makes his first appearance in front of a hometown crowd this weekend against Brendan Schaub.
Despite having 39 fights on his record, Nogueira has never fought in Brazil.
It's important for him that he wins this fight, and he realizes it's even more important to put on an impressive showing in front of the Brazilian fans who want to see one of their favorite heroes succeed.
Brendan Schaub: “I’ll Take My Boxing Against Anyone, Let Alone Nogueira."
4 of 8“I’ll take my boxing against anyone in the division, let alone Nogueira.” From UFC promo.
Heavyweight Brendan Schaub has been confident throughout his young MMA career, but he is steadily becoming a threat in the division with victories over Mirko "Cro Cop" Flipovic and Gabriel Gonzaga.
He is confident in his stand up, and that's the area where he looks to utilize his biggest advantage over his opponent, who is known for overcoming adversity and winning in the end.
Schaub will not let this fight go longer than he wants it to so expect to see some excitement early on from the "Hybrid."
Forrest Griffin: “I Can Kind of Be the Rock He Breaks Against.”
5 of 8“I can kind of be the rock he breaks against.” From UFC promo.
This won't be the first time Forrest Griffin has fought Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, and he may just have the Brazilian muay-thai expert's number when it comes to defeating him.
In the first fight from 2007, Griffin wore down and submitted "Shogun" in the third round.
He may have a similar gameplan this time around, and injuries have kept Rua from fighting at 100 percent for quite some time.
Rua lost his UFC light heavyweight title to Jon Jones earlier this year.
Many are picking Griffin to overcome Rua once again, and it's mostly for the same reasons as the first time around even though nobody really gave him a chance in that fight.
Shogun Rua: I’m Focused on Forrest, but My Big Dream Is to Be UFC Champion Again
6 of 8“I’m focused on Forrest, but my big dream is to be UFC champion again.” From UFC promo.
While Forrest Griffin is focused on only the task at hand, he doesn't have too much motivation outside of just winning this fight.
That could hurt or help him when he takes on Rua, who wants to get back the title he lost to Jon Jones earlier this year.
Rua's mind is in the right place, but he will need to have his health at or close to 100 percent if he has any intentions of defeating Griffin and winning the UFC light heavyweight championship again.
Yushin Okami: “It’s Going to Be Very Exciting and the Greatest Fight Ever.”
7 of 8“It’s going to be very exciting and the greatest fight ever.” From MMAfighting.com.
The style clash between Yushin Okami and Anderson Silva is an interesting one, and it might be one fans saw not too long ago when Silva fought Okami's training partner, Chael Sonnen.
Okami, who is a huge middleweight and strong when it comes to wrestling, might have the formula to defeat Silva, but he will need to implement his gameplan perfectly to avoid the one-second openings Silva needs to end the fight.
One mistake, and his dreams of becoming the first UFC champion from Japan are over. That's what makes this fight and any fight with the "Spider" so interesting.
Anderson Silva: I’m Not Sure What Okami Thinks, but I Don’t Consider That a Loss
8 of 8“I’m not sure what Okami thinks, but I don’t consider that a loss. I wasn’t the one knocked out.” From UFC preview video
When Anderson Silva first met Okami in 2006, he wasn't aware of the rules changes from Pride and Cage Rage, which includes no kicks or knees to a downed opponent.
Silva was disqualified for knocking out Okami with an upkick early in the fight. Silva doesn't consider that a loss and probably looks at it more as a victory.
Revenge won't be on Silva's mind in this fight, and the previous fight is an indication to what he is capable of doing in this fight—knocking Okami out.
