Bleacher Report Rankings: Did We Get It Right...Or Did We Make It Interesting?

Ron JohnsonNov 12, 2008

So we all placed our votes for this week's Top 25. We all knew who was stronger and who was better...sort of. But thanks to the last two weeks, we may have done something that the other guys didn't do: We made it more interesting than advertised. With this week's games coming up, I decided to take a glance at the Top Five teams and see if we actually did it right.

#1) Texas Tech Red Raiders (AP: #2, BCS: #2, BR: #1)

The Raiders earned their spot at the top by not only winning their contest against Oklahoma State but dominating the Cowboys in every single quarter. We all knew that depending on the outcome of the Alabama-LSU game, someone's feelings were going to get hurt. Tech has a huge contest coming up against Oklahoma. If they can survive their trip to Norman and come back to Lubbock with a victory, they will surely win the Big XII and their trip to the BCS.

Upcoming: 11/22 @ Oklahoma, 11/29 vs. Baylor

#2 Alabama Crimson Tide (AP: #1, BCS: #1, BR: #2)

The Tide barely got out of Baton Rouge with their undefeated record still intact. It took overtime to beat the Bayou Bengals, and that didn't sit well with any member of the Bleacher Report Nation. Now the Tide know what's in their future. They know they have two teams who have beaten them in the past. They know that they have a huge showdown for the SEC Championship against a dangerous Gators team. But do they know if they'll be playing for the National Championship at the end of that game?

Upcoming: 11/15 vs. Miss State, 11/22 vs. Auburn, 12/6 vs. Florida (SEC Championship)

#3 Texas Longhorns (AP: #4, BCS: #3, BR: #3)

This is where the controversy starts as far as I'm concerned. The Horns' only loss of the season was a last second shocker against #1 Texas Tech. But Texas bounced back and destroyed Baylor (who are 3-7 (1-5) this season) 45-21. Apparently, everyone thought that was enough to give the Horns the jump over Florida for the third spot in the rankings. I say that is not even close. But having that one loss against a highly ranked team is what helped Texas jump. Now can they keep the momentum going and hope for a Texas Tech loss down the road?

Upcoming: 11/15 @ Kansas, 11/27 vs. Texas A&M

#4 Florida Gators (AP: #3, BCS: #4, BR: #4)

Everyone is asking the question: Can anyone stop the Florida Gators? Well Ole Miss got really lucky by blocking the extra point that would have sent the game into overtime. The Gators have been on a tear ever since, and last weekend's 42-14 drubbing of Vanderbilt (who are 5-4 (3-3) this season only strengthen their chances of heading back to the BCS Championship for the second time in three years. But don't tell Urban Meyer that just yet. The Gators still have four games left, and they are not intending on getting cocky until they're in the show. So talk to them after the SEC Championship Game.

Upcoming: 11/15 vs. South Carolina, 11/22 vs. The Citadel, 11/29 @ Florida State, 12/6 vs. Alabama (SEC Championship)

#5 Oklahoma Sooners (AP: #5, BCS: #5, BR: #5)

The Sooners feel like the odd team out since losing to Texas last month. They know that they'll only have a chance if they beat Texas Tech next weekend to force a dangerous tie in the Big 12 South. If Oklahoma does what Texas couldn't do, they will most likely have a better shot at the Big XII Championship. However, it does get complicated because if that happens this is how it looks: Texas beat Oklahoma, Texas Tech beat Texas, Oklahoma beats Texas Tech. Caught up now? Good, because if this happens, someone's heart will be broken on Selection Sunday.

Upcoming: 11/22 vs. Texas Tech, 11/29 @ Oklahoma State

When the smoke clears, who knows how these teams will fare. The next two weeks will be crucial mainly because Oklahoma and Texas Tech don't play until next weekend. But the remaining three teams all play this weekend, and they all will have something to prove. If a team still suffers without playing that weekend, how do you think Tech and Oklahoma will feel when they've lost their spots because of the bye week?
