Fantasy Stock Watch: Buy Before It’s Too Late

John LorgeNov 10, 2008

The three players I have highlighted below are off to monster fantasy seasons, and there is no reason anything should change as the season goes on.

If you have these guys, be happy because you probably drafted them after more-hyped players went off the board. If you don't have them, put a package together before the owner who does pulls away from the pack.

Jason Kidd, PG, Dallas Mavericks

Kidd is the NBA's newest three point specialist.  Don't believe me?  The 15-year pro from the University of California is shooting 44.4 percent from behind the arc on four-and-a-half attempts per game.

Think it’s a fluke?  Last season, in 29 games with Dallas, Kidd dropped-in 46.1 percent of his threes. People thought Kidd couldn't shoot, but if you leave him wide-open, he will knock it down all night.

On top of his new found stroke, Kidd is still dishing out almost nine assists, grabbing 2.7 steals, and is averaging below two turnovers per game for the first time in his career.

There is the perception that Kidd is over-the-hill, so you should be so kind as to take the NBA's best-rebounding point guard off these owners’ hands.

Andris Biedrins, C, Golden State Warriors

Through seven games this season, Biedrins is second in NBA to Dwight Howard with 14.1 rebounds and 5.1 offensive rebounds per game.  The 6'11" Latvian has posted a double-double every game, and going back to last season, he has 14 straight.

He is averaging 17.3 points and shooting 55.2 percent from the field—last season Biedrins shot 62.6 percent from the field.  Biedrins is not a great shot-blocker, but now that he is playing over 30 minutes per game, he is good for one-to-two per night.

You may still be able to get the center at a good price because he is not perceived as a star player.

If you have him, I doubt you will be able to get a better player in return, as he is out-playing Yao Ming, Andrew Bynum, Tyson Chandler, and Andrew Bogut right now.

Tim Duncan, PF-C, San Antonio Spurs

Manu Ginobli is out until the middle of winter and Tony Parker is out for a month, which leaves Tim Duncan and not much else in San Antonio.

If the Spurs are going to win any games in the next 30 days, it will be on the shoulders of Duncan.  He is already on pace for career highs in points (26.0 per game,) and field goal percentage, at 55.7 percent.

Duncan has only blocked two shots this season, which leads me to believe he has some big-block games in the near future because he has never averaged below two blocks per game in a season.

If you can acquire Duncan now, he will produce big numbers consistently for the remainder of the season, especially while his foreign friends are out.
