BR Vs. BCS: The Dream Matchups We All Want and Need To See
In order to silence the many Sooners fans who are campaigning for their team to be in the BCS Championship Game, I threw out the list of the teams that are creating the most impact heading into the final stretch. Now after that, Oklahoma fans unleashed their utmost respectful fury. It might have had something to do with the fact that Oklahoma State was putting up just as impressive numbers as Oklahoma.
So when the recap came out yesterday, they were at it again. Despite me making it clear that the two hottest teams in the country (besides Texas Tech) were Oklahoma and Florida, the Sooners were stuck in the past flop that is the loss to Ole Miss. With that said, here's a list of the potential BCS Championship Games that I think everyone would want to see...and what the television ratings need to ensure a better result than the last two debacles involving a certain Big Ten team.
Alabama vs. Texas Tech
The Tide are rolling their way into the SEC Championship Game against the Gators. But they still have a few payback games to finish off. Nick Saban is primed and ready to hoist up a trophy that he has only had once in his career. But if the unthinkable happens on December 6th, and they beat Florida in Atlanta, Alabama will have no other choice but to represent the SEC and win the BCS Championship for the conference's third straight time.
On the other side of the fence, there is this team that used to be pushovers in the Big XII. Now the Texas Tech Red Raiders are on the verge of becoming the powerhouse that Oklahoma and Texas still are. Unfortunately, the Sooners and Longhorns are playing second and third fiddle to the duo of Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree. But this could all change if Tech's dreams of perfection and BCS Glory get stopped by that pesky team in Norman.
But a showdown between the #1 Raiders and #2 Tide would settle the question once and for all: which conference is better, Big XII or SEC? But as an SEC guy myself, I already know the answer to that.
Penn State vs. USC
Does anyone remember the last Pac-10-Big Ten National Championship Game? It's either been Big Ten-SEC or Big XII-Pac 10, but I don't remember theh last Pac 10-Big Ten game. If that was to happen (by some miraculous act of God), this is the two frontrunners at the moment.
Penn State is looking for answers after they gave one up to Iowa while USC is trying to find ways to keep their precious Pac-10 Championship from being in someone else's hands. The Lions know that Oklahoma and Texas will both fight for their right to party in the BCS Championship Game. But they should also know that there are two SEC teams who are looking for the same treatment as Big Ten and Big XII usually get.
If this game were to happen, I believe the Big Ten would finally get that elusive National Championship that Ohio State has failed to deliver. As good as USC is on paper, they are not going to hold a candle to the powerhouses of the Big Three (Big XII, Big Ten, SEC).
Texas vs. Penn State
The Horns and the Lions? Sounds brilliant! You got arguably one of the best coaches in college football history in Joe Paterno facing one of the biggest underdogs in college football history in Mack Brown. Ever since Vince Young led him to his only National Championship against shockingly enough USC, Brown hasn't been able to grab the brass ring since. He's been close, but the Big XII has been getting better and better every single season.
As for JoePa, he's been waiting for the moment when he can hoist up another National Championship. But so far, something has always gone wrong for the Nittany Lions. But picture this: If the computer had its way, it would put this contest in front of Florida returning or Oklahoma booming. But if the Big Ten had its way, they would obviously send Ohio State, which begs the question: Is the Big Ten Conference bias against teams that are not Ohio State?
In any event, no team in the Big Ten has the firepower to stop the defense of Texas...or the defense to contain Colt McCoy when he's on his "A" Game. Texas would win this one big, and the Big Ten would be 0-3 in BCS Championships to date.
Florida vs. Oklahoma
The experts claim that these are the two hottest teams in the country right now. But if you were to ask anyone in Lubbock, Texas right now, they would say that these are just two teams in their way to a perfect season and a national championship. But if you were to ask any Gators or Sooners fans, they would say that these two teams will be playing for the title in January.
On one side you have Sam Bradford and the Oklahoma Sooners. You have Bob Stoops who has had some rotten luck in BCS Championships as well as BCS Bowl Games. First came the anarchy with USC and LSU. Then there was the Fiesta Bowl that saw a heavily favored Oklahoma Sooners team get shocked by WAC Champion Boise State. Now the Sooners are looking to relight that fire they once had when they spent every season playing for the National Championship.
But Oklahoma knows that there are two teams in the SEC that will silence the citizens of Norman. On the other side of the spectrum, Florida has been hot since the one point loss to Ole Miss. Now Tim Tebow and Percy Harvin would like to lead the dangerous Gators back to the BCS Championship. If they win the SEC Championship and beat their remaining three opponents this season, Florida will be playing for the National Championship in Miami.
Oklahoma vs. Alabama
The Sooners and The Tide. Who would have guessed this dream matchup? In a way, this game is a good idea because it pits the team that believes that it is the best of the Big XII against the team that has been the unstoppable force in the SEC. In another, it is a bad idea just because the SEC tends to step up when the title is on the line. But when it comes down to it, this brings that question back up once again: who is better? Big XII or SEC?
Bob Stoops has yet to win the Crystal Ball since the computers took over. Now they're hoping that the computers see things in their favor instead of Florida's. But to do that, Oklahoma will have to do what no one else in the Big XII has been to do: stop Texas Tech. As for Nick Saban, he wants to continue the glory of the Alabama storied program. But to do that, he has to lead the Tide to three simple victories: Mississippi State, Auburn and Florida for the SEC Championship.
Did I say simple? I meant hair pulling and unnerving. But this is the life of college football.
Alabama vs. Texas
The Horns want it. The Tide want it. So who gets it? Mack Brown wants the crystal ball back. Nick Saban wants to give the SEC their third straight National championship. But both coaches know that they still have a tough road to travel. If we're going on strength of schedule and whatever some idiotic computer decides, we're all in trouble.
We will most likely not see this matchup because it wouldn't be in the computer's best interest. The computer would most likely shaft Texas Tech and give the nod to Oklahoma or some team out of the Pac 10. Why you ask? Because if you look at what happened last year, Oklahoma could lose the game against Tech in two weeks, still win the Big XII and pull an LSU.
As for 'Bama, they know they have to win those three pesky games left on the schedule. Lose one, and you could get a bigger mess than when Iowa beat Penn State. So if Texas or Alabama or both lose just one more time, someone better get their dancing shoes on.
Florida vs. Texas Tech
This is yet another dream matchup that we all want and need to see. Even Sooners fans are ready to see this one happen. The Raiders are the hottest team in college football right now...but so are Oklahoma and Florida. But when it comes time to decide who plays for the title, either Tech or Oklahoma will not get an invitation to the dance. The Sooners will get a BCS Bid if they can beat Tech and win the Big XII Championship. But that's not till next month.
But while we're talking about it, Florida and Texas Tech looks to be a good showdown. Everyone wants to see the SEC vs. Big XII for the National Championship. Whether it's Alabama or Florida, Texas Tech, Texas or Oklahoma, it promises to be a damn good show. It will also answer the ultimate question that everyone needs the answer to.
Tim Tebow vs. Graham Harrell. Michael Crabtree vs. Percy Harvin. Past Heisman Winner vs. Two Potential Heisman Winners. So many formulas and possibilities. So many intriguing outcomes. Is there a chance of a shootout between the best rushing quarterback in Florida History and one of the best young wideouts in Tech's memory? Absolutely.
Is there anyone that doesn't want to see this happen? Of course. But are they going to complain about it? Don't bet on it. Because when it's all said and done, either the SEC or the Big XII will have the right to say that they're better than the other.
